I was wondering what are some overall advantages and disadvantages of converting to obd1 in a obd2 car.

in b14s, not much. besides that, it is very illegal to do on a street car. honestly, i dont see a need.

Oh really, no advantages huh. Well, I have a B14 and I'm running an OBD1 ecu in my car with an adapter. I have ZERO problems with my car. Why did I decide to make my car OBD 1, cause I can tune my ECU. ;)

weird, you can't tune your ecu if it was obdII? because i am pretty sure you can. jwt offers ecu reprogramming for 95 up, too.
and he didnt ask about an obdI ecu, he asked about converting his car over completely. and i never said it would give him problems. but there is no advantage to it. you can get the samething out of an obdII ecu.

Yes, JWT offers it. But I tune my OWN ecu ;).

Exactly, JWT is the only ecu upgrade for obdII cars. With obdI you can use calum's ecu or a couple of other people's daughterboards. You should(I don't know for sure) also be able to get rid of that pesky crank angle sensor for the fidanza guys. There are a few other advantages that I can't think of off the top of my head but I'm sure someone will mention something else.

well really i wanted to know because a forum member can make me a adapter using my stock obd2 wire harness. I would like run a either a calum ecu, u12 ecu, or just a get a daugtherboard. The only thing that i was confused about was with a obd1 ecu would i have to change the sensors like maf, temp, etc..

youll never pass emissions.

ok, so you want to swap the ecus, and not the entire obd systems?
i did not know the obdII guy were using obdI ecus now.

i didnt know it could be done time to search and be educated.

themonster4door,

Become a contributing member so you can have access to the ECU tuning section. ;).

B14 Se-Rious:

Why would he not be able to pass emisions?? Everything looks perfectly stock and behaves as such.

Plus, it's a plug and play thing, if you need to go back to OBD2 just take out the adapter harness and plug in the OBD2 ECU.

^^^ well, if there is an adaptor harness that keeps the factory harness in tack then I guess he could swap out ecus and then pass. I dint know we had such harnesses available. If he went obd2 to 1 and couldnt g oback, he wont pass because the obd2 scanner wont read the obd1 ecu correctly.

It's just an adapter that plugs into the OBD2 harness and into the OBD1 ECU. ;) Very effective and simple :).

Kind of off-topic. But what advantages would an U12 ecu have on an all motor DE?
Thanks,
Alvin

I've been going back and forth with converting to OBD1 and running a Calum ECU. If his can get rid of the small issues I have with the JWT ECU, I'm all over that. I'm sure there is more power in the VE with tuning. After seeing his stock NX with just a POP pick up 9whp on a DynoDynamics dyno with just an ECU, I was excited.

themonster4door,

My guess would be (since I've never looked at the computer screen when they test) is that when they plug in the testing equipment to the computer it'll output OBD1 data but any half decent technician would look at the year of the car and realize it was supposed to be OBD2. You can't really "hide" that unless your local emissions only tests exiting gasses for emissions and under the hood inspections or the guy just doesn't give a damn or the guy is a total idiot that doesn't realize a mid/late 90's car and up is OBD2 only.

from what i understand if the obd2 port is damaged or not working they just do a 2 speed stall test
i have heard this from many inspection tecs in texas

Im going to become a forum supporter here soon i can have access to the ecu tuning section asap. But if i were to run a u12 ecu would i notice any gains in hp with my set up. My Hp goals are not that much i wanna stick with the t25 run any where from stock boost to bout 9 psi. As far as emissions goes i would just swap the stock ecu back in but i cant rid of this egr code and i could pass....ive tired the resistor thing and it didnt work....

The U12 ECU at least the ones we use are for DET engines. We use there base map so that we could use the 370cc injectors without a hitch and then tune from the base map to get the most power. Take care.
