: Internal differences
Les Mellor 10-23-2005, 01:22 AM Gidday,
My question is simple, what is the difference internally material wise between a Turbo SR and a non Turbo? Cam timing and lift, fine, compression ratio, ok but what else. Pistom Material, Bearings, rings etc
Thanks, Les
spdracerUT 10-23-2005, 02:19 AM Just about nothing aside from the valves (sodium filled on the DETs) which is why you can make 400whp on DEs without really thinking about it. The GTi-R has slightly larger bearings, beefier rods, lower compression, etc. Check out se-r.net, the info is there.
coalitionSE-L 10-23-2005, 09:28 AM In the DET there are oil squirters in the block that squirt oil up at the bottoms of the pistons. Also I have heard, although I'm not 100% sure about it, that even the Bluebird and Avenir have stronger rods than a regular DE.
Jaketips42 10-23-2005, 11:56 AM Isn't it just the gti-r with oil squirters? UK 10:1 has sodium filled valves too. I don't there is much difference. The only one with differences would be the gti-r motor.

No, Bluebirds and Avenirs also have oil squirters.
Check out the following thread. In post #38, Andreas Miko states that there are four different types of rods and that Bluebird/Avenir rods are stronger than standard DE rods.

UK-SRi 10-23-2005, 04:31 PM Also the GTiR has 360 degree oiling on the mains.

I'm going to check SE-R.net, but I was just wondering if you're saying that the valves are superior on the DEs or the DETs?

The sodium filled valves are superior, but you can still make tons of power on a DE without them. Its not a big issue.
jerimiah 10-27-2005, 01:23 AM ^^Why is sodium filled valves better? What does sodium do?

jerimiah 10-27-2005, 02:34 AM I want ITB's!!!!!
Whats with the 300 hp NA sr20? is that stock??? I thought the GTI-R's were DET's..
How do you filter the air in a ITB car??? Run 4 filters?
Thanks for the link MPG9999 helps me understand a little more.
UK-SRi 10-27-2005, 02:26 PM The 300 hp na touring car was very special, it had a special head with the exhausts facing backwards, cams reground to suit, and a shed load of tuning work done to it.
Mike
jerimiah 10-27-2005, 02:28 PM Can you buy them?????
bigtoe 10-27-2005, 09:29 PM The only reason the head was turned so the ex faced backwards was so that IES, the folks who built the motors, could run forced ram air from the frontal area of the cars. They were 54C highport heads, 300bhp at 8,200rpm. These were the first IES SR20's, not the ones which won the manufacturer's championship. The later motors ran the VVL Heads in normal configuration, save for condemning the VVL and using single lobe cams, +300bhp at ±8500rpm.
It should be noted that when Nissan took the project of a 2litre NA motor to IES in th UK, the first motors done in Japan came with 280° Tomei Cams.
These motors most significant mods were crank destroke, bore increase, rod length increase, single compression rings, larger inlet and ex valves (bigger than 35mm and 31mm) and dry sumping.
You can buy one, most likely refurbished for +20grand US$, or you can get pretty damned close to 300bhp for about 12grand US$ using parts available to commonors like us.
jerimiah 10-27-2005, 10:29 PM Damn you seem to know your shit man! Im astonished at your knowledge. Tell me then...what would be the best sr20 motor set-up for around $2000 US?
Bluebird DET
VVL
GTIR
Avenir W11 motor
or buy a $400 jdm de, then build the motor with the rest of the money
Keep in mind If im going turbo - ide like a kit that comes complete with everything I need (such as injectors, ECU, etc...)
bigtoe 10-28-2005, 10:36 PM Talk to Andreas Miko. He'd be the best person to help you out there.
Andreas Miko 10-29-2005, 09:53 AM I think the poor guy can build a NA 300 hp VE motor for about $9,500 US while paying me to build it.
SR16VE motor $1000
Tomei crank $2100
J&E 90 pistons $600
Eagle Rods $350
Sleeved block $1100
Custom 90 mm head gasket $150
All bearings and miss parts $400
Miss block prep for big crank $200
Head Posrt $1200
Pay me to build motor $1000
N1 or JWT cams with Valve springs $1200
sentra2bturbod 10-29-2005, 07:39 PM Do you guys happen to know if the valves used in a JDM SR20det RWD motor are sodium filled.
Also would they work in a USDM FWD SR20DE head .
I'm about to convert my FWD SR20DE motor to turbo, and I have a parts left over from a RWD JDM motor
Adam
UK-SRi 10-30-2005, 03:04 AM The sodium valves have a 7mm stem diameter instead of a 6 mm diameter, so the valve guides have to change too, there is no other reason stopping you from doing that.
