: Is it the starter or alternator?
prince nismo 10-26-2005, 09:21 AM ok, so for some reason i'm having a tard moment here and i can't figure out why my car isn't starting, i know it isn't the battery but i'm having issues figuring out if its the starter or alternator.
symptoms: Turns the key and i hear a single click... makes me the think its the starter, cause if it were the alternator the starter should be clicking a couple times trying to start the car right? all the lights on the interior work, and do the normal flicker when i try and start the car. Any suggestions?
sakerocket1 10-26-2005, 09:39 AM why would the alternator start a car? it is the starter.

its the starter
the alternator keeps the battery charged which in turn allows the starter to "start" the car, not the other way around.
you might be lucky and it might just be the solenoid (but you still have to pull off the starter to get to it)
good luck

paNX2K&SE-R 10-26-2005, 09:58 AM Test your battery voltage with a voltmeter. Check your ground on the thermostat housing too. If both of those check out ok then pull your starter and have it tested.
prince nismo 10-26-2005, 01:27 PM thanks guys, but since once again i'm sleep depribed where is the starter? i can't find it. i got the alternator found but i can't find the damn starter,. anyone wanna give me a hint where to look maybe a picture or something?
james vick 10-26-2005, 01:35 PM thanks guys, but since once again i'm sleep depribed where is the starter? i can't find it. i got the alternator found but i can't find the damn starter,. anyone wanna give me a hint where to look maybe a picture or something?Test the battery too and make sure it dosn't have a dead cell in it. It will cause the same problem. As for the starter look under the intake under the #4 intake runner.
jerimiah 10-27-2005, 01:20 AM When my started solenoid went out all I heard was one click. Just buy the solenoid its like 16 bucks and you'll have no more problems. Unless the starter has been whining when you start the car then just replace the whole starter its like 96 bucks IIRC
totaled200ser 10-28-2005, 09:24 PM did you try to jump it or even check the battery???
t bags 10-29-2005, 12:21 AM jack the car up on jackstands and its right under the intkae manny..their are 2 14mm bolts that hold it in place..along with a blk wire that connects to it.
jerimiah 10-30-2005, 11:44 PM There is 2 wires. Battery and ignition ^^^ FYI
El Gabito 10-31-2005, 12:23 PM did you try to jump it or even check the battery???
Did you do this? It sounds like a classic dead battery to me.
totaled200ser 10-31-2005, 01:39 PM really i see this thing everyday at work, sound like you have a dead battery, check it first or you can just throw a part on the car that won't fix the problem like some other people & customers i know
jerimiah 10-31-2005, 06:36 PM He said he knows its not the battery. its in the first sentance. He also said all the lights in the car work - Ill bet my G against your 200 its the solenoid.

He says he knows it's not the battery.
jerimiah 10-31-2005, 11:46 PM But the fact that he has interior lights SAYS its not the battery.
shoot im having the SAME for a month and im sick of this car.
this is my 3rd starter. grounds are good from the thermostat. batttery is still at 12 to 14 and my lights are still bright so alternator is fine. thinking of getting a ground kit now. not sure what else to do. i did robs ignition relay checks and what not, possible ignition switch or clutch switch ???. all i get is a grr grrr grr sound and then it starts sometimes.
im thinking maybe it the re-manufacturer part since i have seened mixed reviews between the mitusbishi and hitachi starter. me need help to and ive look and look through many pages on this forums with no luck. :(
jerimiah 11-02-2005, 12:48 PM IMO the mitsubushi starter was better than hitachi - I had both in my cars at one time or another.
totaled200ser 11-02-2005, 01:28 PM LIGHTS CAN STILL WORK AND NOT HAVE ENOUGH POWER TO CRANK THE CAR OVER!!! did he loadtest the battery???? what does the battery read for voltage with car off, how bout when the car cranks, could be the starter solenoid but just saying that he knows the battery is good means nothing to me, how many customers have come here and said i know it isn't the battery. you can have a brand new battery w/ a dead cell. just give some numbers that you can tell me the battery is good and that will eliminate the possibility of the battery. if the alternator isn't charging correctly, you can test that too. also the same w/ the starter solenoid. get a multimeter and check out the car, no one can diagnose a car for sure w/ out testing or see the results of the tests that should be performed.
jerimiah 11-02-2005, 02:15 PM If its dead battery LIGHTS WONT WORK TOOL.
chriscar 11-02-2005, 02:22 PM But you can't say that if the lights are on that the battery has ENOUGH power to start the car.
