: tick, tick, tick...
vqman 11-06-2005, 02:37 PM so from my front passenger side I hear this tick, tick, tick sound that goes faster as the car goes faster. The CV boot is ripped and grease all over the place.
Is this sound similar to a worn CV joint? It doesn't change when I turn, except maybe it gets quieter. Also, there is a horrible smell coming from the same area after I drive, like hot antifreeze, it smells like the car has overheated. But it hasn't overheated and there is plenty of antifreeze in the overflow container, the smell just reminds me of an overheated car. Whatever it is, it smells hot.
I'm thinking maybe the smell is being caused by heat from the friction of a CV joint operating with little grease that is burning (or just really hot)..I guess I'm going to have to replace the axle regardless, and if it fixes the smell I'll know that's what it was.
But I really need to get this taken care of before it starts snowing. I don't want the M3 out in the snow/salt/sand...
El Gabito 11-06-2005, 02:46 PM Have you checked your tires for a nail?
vqman 11-06-2005, 02:57 PM no, it sounds too loud to be a nail or something in the tire...
crazyoldcoot 11-06-2005, 10:15 PM I have smelled that smell before. It was burning grease from my CV joint. Replace the boot and pack it with new grease and see if the sound and smell persists

at this point i would just buy a new axle... the race is probably worn bad by running it with out grease and the bearings have been heated too much..
www.raxles.com... worth every penny!

vqman 11-07-2005, 01:53 PM yeah, I'm going to replace the whole axle. I think I've destroyed it...
but I already replaced the drivers side axle about 3 months ago, so I'm not going to do raxles. Maybe one of these days if/when I turbo the thing..

buy a raxle.. you won't have to replace every 3 months then.. trust me.. it is worth it.. you will not have to worry about the axle(s) any more... this is a part NOT to be cheap on, IMHO.

ok, ok...I bought the raxle. It should be here in a couple of days..

tell me what you think of it when you get it....:D
vqman 11-09-2005, 10:45 AM from the looks of it on the website, they seem to be a quality product. I won't really know the difference until I pull the old one and compare the two..

daveracer 11-09-2005, 11:29 AM I've been using stock B14 axles for two years drag racing. 40-50 runs at the track. Previously they had 125k miles on them. I say try and find a decent, cheap b14 axle.
nisser 11-10-2005, 09:18 AM Autozone and Raxle both have a lifetime warranty IIRC
El Gabito 11-10-2005, 09:24 AM My local rack and axle shop has a lifetime warranty on their stuff, and they always have actual Nissan stuff that they rebuilt in house. That's what I'd do, but it looks like you already decided.
