I can barely get mine in reverse but what does that have to do with 4th? But I just have to try a couple of times and it goes in.

this happens to me mostly on early mornings. I would put in on 1st then back to reverse.

I used to have that problem in Reverse, I would leave the car in nutral, (sp) let out the clutch, press the clutch again and it would go in reverse very easily. From what I have read it does this as a saftey feature so you are not in 5th at 60 and accidently shift into reverse. I would normally have the problem when I pressed the clutch to start the car and shift to reverse to back up.

there's been way too much misinformation on these boards lately.

Actually I read it on this board, someone asked about putting on a shift knob from a Spec V, a consern was what if someone thought the car was a 6 speed and tried to shift to 6 and instead hit reverse. Someone else said that the tranny would not allow this and you would not be able to get in gear. I am sure I am confused as to why. But as far as the car being hard to get in reverse (while stopped anyway) just let out clutch push in again and it will go in gear very easily. That one is from experence. The Reverse from 60 is not, just something someone said and I am sure I was confused and have forgotten as to why

The reason we have problems getting into reverse is there are no synchros in reverse. Synchros line up the teeth on the gears so that they pop right in. Great for driving, but expensive. Our cars are economy cars, no synchros in reverse is cheaper, bam, we don't get them. The hard time is from when the teeth don't line up, you can't move those gears together. Double clutch a little and your odds of the mesh working go up quite a bit.

the 1st sentence you wrote is perfect. the 2nd one is pretty good also. the rest suck :-(
great for driving, but expensive?... BULLSHIT! all 5 of your forward gears are synchro'd.
a cheap economy car don't get them? BS again!
show me a car with a manual tranny at ANY price, that has synchro's for reverse that you can slam into reverse @60mph, or 50, or 40 or even 20mph without grinding the shit outta! this is just plain BS!
move on to a subject you know something about!!

Woah, don't get touchy. Reverse and first are the only gears that you put your car into when you are not moving, so they are the only ones you can get away with not putting synchros on. However, there is no excuse for not putting synchromesh on 1st gear, so we have it on all five forward gears. I never said anything about not getting synchros on any other gear.

Yes, the car is still an economy car, and no, we do not have synchros for reverse, which is what causes the trouble described in the original post.

And yes, there is a lockout mechanism that doesn't even allow you to move the shifter from 5th directly to reverse, moving or not.

-Most- (maybe not all, okay) more expensive manual cars have synchromesh for reverse. Whether you like it or not, it's not to help you get the car into reverse at 60. It's to prevent the problem asked about at the beginning of this thread.

Now, go get laid or something to ease your tension. ;)

hey driven97. if you have a properly working tranny in your se-r, you have synchro's for first gear. can you not shift into first @5-10mph without grinding?

What's your point? First has the same type of synchros as reverse. Can't shift into either while moving 5-10 mph. Why? I'm not too sure how those work. If you know how the reverse and first synchros differ from the others, enlighten me.

Thanks.

Most of the economy nissans are famous for not going into reverse, especially when cold. I double clutch mine in the orning and it usually goes in fine. Now if I could only get rid of the startup clatter...LOL

Simply keep pulling back on the stick in reverse while letting out on the clutch. You should feel it go all the way in if you keep pressure on it.

I usually just release the e-brake, and it has no problem going into reverse.
