: Difficult start after fill up?

Well, ever since twisted200ser and me did some prep work for the upcoming turbo I've had trouble starting the car when I get gas. Not sure if what we did could of had anything to do with it or not. We tapped the block, removed egr, and relocated the battery to the trunk. Now when I get gas, once I'm done and go to start the car it'll crank and crank, probably for about 5 seconds before it fires up. I didn't put two and two together until the second time it did this, getting gas again. If I make stops, only a few mins in between it'll continue to do this, each time with less trouble, until it is back to starting like it always has. I have no clue what's going on. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Chad

It's a 98 SE, and I have know idea how to "mess with my evoporative emissions"
I'm a newb :(

It seems you know how because you removed the egr system. What did you do with the hole you put in the block by the way?

We used a block off kit from nissport to remove the egr. I had a guy helping me, twisted200ser, he has a turboed b14, so he did alot of the stuff that I really only knew how to do in theory. I did a lot of watching and absorbing of information. Talking about the nightmare we had tapping the block? Well, a nightmare to me anyways, chris was as calm as can be. It looks a little messy, due to lots of rtv to seal it up, but it's not leaking anymore:biggthump. When the turbo goes on, we plan on threading in the drain, and sealing it up with jb weld. Now back to this odd fill up problem. I'm still pretty lost on this.

JB weld and rtv huh... ok. Have you ever noticed the amount of pressure that comes out the filler neck after opening it? Do you still get that now after all that stuff you did?

Hey, as long as i'm not leaking oil it's cool with me, my engine compartment isn't exactly spotless:rofl:

I never had any trouble with starting since I got the car, about 50,000 miles ago. I've taken off the gas cap, and you can hear the pressure coming out of the filler neck, then I waited a bit, checked my fluid levels, capped it up again and tried starting, started right up:confused: I don't know what's going on, it only does it when I get gas:confused:

3rd time in a row now. I got gas today, and once again I had difficulty starting up the car. Still clueless

I guess it's the evap, that's what everyone is saying. I'm a mechanical newb, I don't really know what this is. And I don't know what I need to do to fix the problem...someone out there has got to know. And why does this only occur when I fill up??? It's been 5 or 6 times in a row now.

You basically picked the wrong car to do this too. The OBDII 1/2's ;) are simply a PITA when it comes to the emissions.EVAP systems.

What ECU are you using?
Wha rear O2 are you using?
What did you do to the wiring harness?
What exactly did you do with the EVAP and EGR vaccum hoses?

He is changing to an obd2 system as soon as jwt gets off their ass. What i did was i pretty much bypassed all the egr crap i looped the vaccuum lines like the egr was not there. What is weird to me is that its only when he physically fills up with gas not just opening the cap. Anyone eliminate egr on a 98 before someone has to know what is the deal. Pm that guy in hawaii to see what he did.

I know that at start up the 98-99 system does a pressure test of the gas tank/EVAP system. He might want to look up the JWT re-wire instructions and unplug the rear canister plugs (the instructions say which one). Other than that make sure that none of the EVAP hoses, especially the ones going from the manifold to the "T" on the drivers side frame rail, and from that same "T" to the rear canister.
