Getting ready to do a clutch job on my G20 and went to Advance Auto, Pep- Boys, and NAPA and All I could find was:

quote:
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
work with GL-3, GL-4 and GL-5
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

on all of the bottles.

NAPA does carry a GL-4 ONLY that is 85W90 gear oil, but I thought ours were either 75W90 or 80W90. Would the 85W90 be ok or am I aslking for trouble.

I am not really interested in Redline MTL or MT-90. This is a stock replacement, I am price conscious and I am looking for a standard gear oil.

Any suggestions would be great!

My impression is what you do not want is GL-5 only or GL-3 only.
The stuff that is GL3/4/5 all in one bottle should be just fine.

The problem with GL5 only is that it is corrosive to yellow metals (brass/bronze) which synchros are made from. Don't know the specifics of GL3, but it ain't GL4!

Check your owner's manual for what gear weight they recommend for the your ambient temperatures.

Well, both the manual and what I meant to say was that I need GL-4 75W-90 or 80W-90. Either viscosity is fine.

What I wanted to make sure of was the the gear oil that states it is for all three GL-3, GL-4, and GL-5 would be OK in our transmissions. Just as long as it is not ONLY a GL-5 oil I will be OK.

ttt

So, is it ok to use the gear oil designed for GL-3, GL-4, and GL-5 in our trannies.

Smart ass! :D

Hey Smooth or any one for that matter. All I am trying to figure out is if it is ok to use the gear oil that says it will work for all 3.

Since there is no one around town that seems to sell a GL-4 ONLY gear oil in the 75W90 or 80W90 viscosity, I need to buy something.

So far, I will assume that answer to be YES! but for some reason I haven't gotten a straight answer.

Try calling a Nissan dealership tomorrow or call Andreas.
