: Tweeter location
FastNX 02-25-2002, 04:09 PM Hello everybody, I have a full stereo installed, and it sounds great, but the tweeters are way too harsh, and look ass-ugly in the temporary location that i put them in, which is the bottom left and right corners of the windshield. I was thinking drilling and flush mounting them in the part of the door that is by the dash, forward and above the inside door handle, but that is even closer to me, and theefore even more harsh. anybody out there have any good ideas for tweeter mounting?
NX$paniard 02-25-2002, 04:45 PM well i had my tweets on the top of the door and they werent too bad in fact i will be putting new ones there soon.....it involves a little cutting of plastic and other panel materials.....what do you have your x-over set at?
Da91NX 02-25-2002, 06:57 PM ain't none of those work for me.
YeloBlammo 02-25-2002, 07:27 PM if the tweets are too harsh turn the gains down on them a bit...what kind are they?..what are they powered by?...like said before, whats the xover point?...im sure you can get them to sound good in the doors...just my opinion
MEclassic 02-25-2002, 08:05 PM I mounted my tweeters (Infinity reference components) in the kick panels - works perfect if you have ABS, otherwise you will have to get a passenger side kick panel for an ABS car to have a place to mount. This might not work for all tweeters though - you need a swivel or angle mount to make it work, and flush swivel mounts (like mine) will be a really tight fit. They sound great in this location - they are very close to the woofers in the door and are in the mathematically optimal placement (listening position is roughly equal distance from both tweeters). If you want pics I have them, I can email them or put them on sr20de.org and post them here if there's enough interest.
Josh
I put mine under the cigarette lighter, and ashtray I'll try to get a pic.
llaprad1 02-26-2002, 03:12 AM I installed myine within the panel on the inside of the rear view mirrors.
As long as they point perpendicular to the door (read: not *directly *at* you), they wont be audibly overt.
FastNX 02-26-2002, 03:23 PM ok here we go
thye are infiniti Kappa tweets, the whole component set actually. the crossover is at 3.5KHz and is non-adjustable. the setting on the crossover is at the lowest position (0db). It is run from the same amp as the mids so i cant just turn them down independently. They come with flush and surface mounts if i wanted to do that. they sound awesome, just too damn close! If i could turn the mids up without changing the tweets, i'd tdo that, then use a lower gain setting, but that is the same as turning the tweets doen; impossible with the setup I have.\
BTW my whole setup is a s follows:
Pioneer DEH-P6000 fold-down CD
Infiniti Kappa 6.5" component set
Pheonix Gold QX 300.4 amp
Alpine type R 12"sub
stock rear speaker (getting the boot soon, rear speakers actually hurt imaging and are only for rear passengers, which i will probably never have :) )
tissue 02-27-2002, 03:51 AM do you have the tweeters pointing at the centre of the car? cause they are gonna be very harsh on the dash pointing towards you. Try them in the window sill (where the side mirrors join the door) or in the kickpanels temporarily to see what you prefer.
FastNX 02-27-2002, 03:24 PM yeha i just tried them last night by the mirrors and its much less harsh. I guess the sound was being reflected off the widshiled. True, if they are not pointing towards your head they are quieter, but i find it becomes more mushy, some clarity is lost. with them down low, by the K-panels, I find it hurt the imaging, so I guess for now I will leave them by the mirrors. Any ideas on how to secure them there?

See if Jerome would take pictures of his NX door panels. It used to be mine. I installed a set of Kappa tweets in the door panels right above the window cranks over 3 or 4 years ago.
I think he still has the tweets hooked up.

I think some of that percieved clarity loss your hearing is just the difference between having it pointed to you and not pointed to you. Kind of like the exaggerated "smiley face" EQ... Bass up, Treble up, mids down sounds more dynamic (and a little harsh), but it isn't truly accurate.

Dont know how your tweeters are, but mine are flush-mount. I took a hole-saw bit to the panel and mounted them in there.
(I'll try to take a pic tomorrow)
FastNX 02-28-2002, 12:37 PM thanks for the help. those pics would be good, thanks
Pretty White 02-28-2002, 10:59 PM OK, since angelfire wants to be an ass I will take a look at this page. Look at the picture of my steering wheel. Thats where my tweeters are (not on the wheel but beyond it on the door panel). I will go in the car with the vid cam tommorow and if I remember I will load them to you.

Tunez 03-01-2002, 10:45 PM Lesson in Car Audio number one. :)
Tweeters in seperates should not be more than 18" away from the mids. Also for the best imaging, place them in the kick panels as far back as you can but still within the 18". "Imaging is when you try to get the speakers the same distance away from your ears on each side. Obviously in a car this is not feasible unless you drive a McLaren F1. It takes some getting used to cause most people are accustomed to having the left side much closer than the right.
One of the worse locations for tweeters is bouncing off of the winshield due to the MAJOR seperation in sound from the tweeters and mids. It causes your ears to pick on the tweeters mcuh more than the mids.
Another thing is to set all levels to flat (bass and treble) while adjusting everything up. If you put the speakers low and it doesn't sound good or sounds too low for your taste then try changing the dB boost on the x-overs up to the next setting to help out.
If you have anymore questions please feel free to ask. I have been doing car audio for almost 16 years now and own a car audio business if you are wondering. :D
tissue 03-02-2002, 09:48 PM Tunez: i know about the whole seperation thing, but dont you find that tweeters in the kicks lowers the sound stage? It makes it seem as if the sound stage is on the floor.
I reckon unless you were going to enter SQ comps, you should put the tweets where you think they sound best.
Tunez 03-02-2002, 09:55 PM Actually if you will aim them both at the top center of the car it should improve that. Aiming them there can make a difference. hook them to a long piece of wire and move them around and see where you like them best.
I did a 93 Taurus *** and fiberglassed some kick panels in and it sounded like the people were singing on the hood of the car. :)
QuickZeek 03-05-2002, 08:54 AM to be the custom doit your selfer that i am I mounted some Polk Audio's in a pod mounted to the roof just infront of the Mirror.
it looks like a map light pod.
I really gives an overall sound i mean it dosent sound like all the music is comming from the doors or the sides kinda like a center channel.
I have a digi cam if anyone wants pics. I could also tell you how to make your own but i'm not about to make more of these.
QuickZeek 03-05-2002, 01:12 PM http://www.sr20de.org/images/images/NX%202000/tweeterpod.jpg
here is what it looks like
tissue 03-06-2002, 11:28 PM not bad quickzeek, id just be frightened by the imaging :) (and it falling off rear view mirror style, cause of too much bass)
does anyone have pics of custom door pods in their nx'en?
