: anyone with MSD Ignition-help
SR20DETSSS 02-26-2002, 12:55 AM Has anyone her installed an MSD ignition 6A into an sr20det ??
If so please let me know what are the advantages and disadvantages of having it.....And how much are they??? Where can I buy one cheap!
SERprise In WV 02-26-2002, 01:12 AM I do not have the 6A, but do have the Digital 6 box on my '93. I highly recommend it. It provides a nice, even spark, which you can feel on a NA car.
I bought mine for the programmable ignition retard (for nitrous), which can retard the ignition any number of degrees when the nitrous is hit, in .10 of a degree increments. Very useful.
It also has a built-in two-step rev limiter, which is used to launch the car at the dragstrip. Basically, when the two-step 'sees' 12v of power (switch), the car will hold at whatever rpm limit you set it to (mine's at 5,200 rpm) for the launch. Saves the trouble of watching your tach and adjusting the rpm as the lights are coming down on the starting line.
Hope this helps.
PDX S2000 02-26-2002, 06:21 PM I couldn't get past 1 bar w/o the msd.... it feels like it runs much smoother at higher boost levels, a worthy investment (plugs don't seem to foul as quickly either)
sentraturbo 02-26-2002, 07:20 PM so would you guys rather have the 6 whichever, the SCI, or 7whichever...
Big John 02-27-2002, 12:34 AM 6AL witha 2 step box works fine for me. But Digital 6 is REAL nice. I got mine cheap off of Ebay. Good luck!

Im just thinking of getting a MSD6a with MSD coild blaster>..is that good!??!? whats a digital 6?!? Also would there be performance gain in MSG 6a?!?
SERprise In WV 02-27-2002, 01:12 AM MSD Digital 6 box is about $300 from www.summitracing.com .
You can read all about MSD products at www.msdignition.com

PDX S2000 02-27-2002, 10:36 AM I went the cheap route, just have the 6A (didn't feel the need for the rev limiter) with an E core coil.... it seems to work fine, if I had the money at the time I would've considered the digital 6.... I think I got the 6a for around $130 (with a friend's discount at a local auto store)
TurbochargedSER 02-27-2002, 11:22 AM An aftermarket ignition becomes a *NECESSITY* once you start boosting your car past 12-14 psi (~230hp)! The factory ignition starts to cut out over these boost levels. The MSD units amplify the spark in the cylinder! High cylinder pressures due to high amounts of boost tend to blow the spark away within the combustion chamber. This creates sputtering and hesitation.
As for which model MSD will suit your needs:
1. MSD 6A - 460-480V
2. MSD 6AL - 460-480V + Rev limiter (Not 2 Step) + Module Ready
3. MSD SCI - Same as 6A
4. MSD SCI-L - Same as 6AL
5. MSD Digital 6 & 7 - 535V + Rev Limiter (2 Step) + Retard
6. MSD 7AL2 - 480V + Rev Limiter (Not 2 Step) + Module Ready (Drag Only)
sentraturbo 02-27-2002, 11:47 AM what's the rev limiter??? and two step??? i mean does it stop the spark at a certain rpm, or vices versa... sorry if i sound so stupid...:D

Yes a rev limiter stop the RPM at certain limit. I believe a 2 step is for use on drag car. The first rev limit is for starting launch (say 3500 rpm) and the second "step" is a rev limiter.
hey808 02-27-2002, 12:36 PM Anyone know the part # of the tach adaptor needed to install the MSD 6A into the newer, internal coil, ignition systems? I'll be installing this in the car soon in preparation of the turbo. Thanks.
Andrew 02-27-2002, 07:27 PM Which coil did you use with your MSD Digital 6? Mine would be for a N/A - JWT NOS system.

Well, I wouldn't say it's a necessity. Maybe so with water injection, which I've heard is harder on the ignition system. But I've had my car to 22 psi on the stock 9.5:1 motor, and stock ignition. Only magnecore 8.5 wires, NGK BKR7E plugs, stock coil. Mike K. and Rob C. were right there in front of the car the whole time, and heard no misfiring, sputtering or hesitation. 350 wheel hp, clean as butter (minus the smoke) =) I've also tried it around the street when I get some C16, and I can't detect any misfire.
I'm pretty sure Ryan Neilsen got his car to 350 whp with the stock ignition also right?

I am going to have to disagree with you only because I have seen this so many times before.
I had MAJOR ignition problems on the dyno and at the track throughout my time being turbocharged. I was sputtering very bad without an aftermarket ignition with anything past 14 psi. The car would hesitate, have surges, and just run rough.
Now, the car ran fine with anything less than 14 psi, but I wanted to crank the boost up! I put the 6A on the car and it IMMEDIATELY ran smoother, took out the hesitations and overall made the car run a whole lot better. On the dyno the ignition would cut out with anything more than 19 psi so I had to put the boost down to 18 psi and crank the timing down to 18* from 20*. Depending on what area of the country you live in will have a lot to do with ignition also.
As for Ryan's car, yes we layed down 363 whp with the factory ignition, BUT the car runs very rough, has slight hesitation and just isn't smooth.
Mike K. had to install an MSD unit on Ryan B's car to make it boost anything past 14 psi also. Ben B's car is a classic example; we had to put an MSD 6A on his car as well.
There have been too many cases of high hp SR20's that have needed an aftermarket ignition to support the amount of air going through the engine!
guys i installed msd 6a on my 96 altima with stock sr20de a/t...i noticed some difference in rpm response (delayed)...do i need a tach adapter? thanks
