I got a stock clutch in my ....stock...SER (until my header comes in this week). I wanted to know if there is anyway at all to get a good launch out of the car on a stock clutch and not eat the clutch alive, afterall, I am a student on a student budget who can't afford a new clutch right now :)

If it isn't possible lemme know, otherwise, lead me to the light!

drop it, it makes it less likely to burn :p

What do you mean by "drop it"? When I race someone I raise to about 2K and when it is a go I slightly ride the clutch out to engagement then floor it. Is this wrong or what.

just drop it means no riding of it. I was at the track with slicks and at 6k rpm I dropped the clutch. 2 runs like this. The car has 58k on it now and the clutch is on its way out. I am a college student also and I understand where you are coming from. On the street just drop the clutch at 2500rpm and feather the gas around 5-6k because it will eventually hook and pull the shit out of your neck muscles. Dropping the clutch is pretty much pulling it out as fast as you can. Good luck

Correct me if I'm wrong but, letting out slow is what ruins clutches, it glazes the disk surface, kinda like slowly applying your brakes over a long distance versus applying them more forecefully for a shorter duration. Dropping a clutch is harder on your tranny and your drive shafts, but not on the clutch itself. Considering highly modified SR20's have a tendencey to bust shafts and trannies, I'd say risk ruining the clutch in that situation by letting out slowly, it's cheaper than a tranny, although maybe not by a whole lot. However, being a daily driver, with fewer mods, I'd think dropping it would be the way to go.

according to SE-R.net:

6. Launching. Again, this is what has worked best for me, with my car. I usually take the RPMs to 3,500 and do a slip clutch launch. Before installing my header, my launch point was bout 3,000 RPM and dropping the clutch. This is a sort of gray area -- some people can have success launching a different way. It comes down to what feels best to you.

also from SE-R.net, yet almost contradicting:

You release that race clutch ever so slightly (DON'T!!DROP the Hammer!!) while holding your Revs at the set given point. You want the car to feel like it's going to bog for a split sec, then you're outta there.

i think the key word in that statement is race clutch. depending on how good yer clutch is, i'd say drop it from 2500-3000. i used to let my stock clutch barely grab then i'd drop it.
another factor is the tires you're ridin' on. crappy tires will spin thru third if you're not accurate.

Nissans almost never break driveshafts unless some other factor is involved.

you know what is bad, is side steppin your clutch...ouch!!! It really hurt me and my car. but it did leave sum nice tread on the ground!

whats side stepping?

i believe it is just pushing in your clutch all the way and jerk your foot to the left of the clutch so it slams up. I think this maybe bad for a lot of things but in it whips your head into the back of your seat like you got 500hp!

i say drop it, wheel hop or spin is bad so if it does it, try and thread it, half way out and dont floor the gas play with it,

its all about experimenting...

GOOD LUCK

Had my SE-R since 94, bought it new. Let it fly from 6500 over a 100 times. Just recently replaced stock clutch. Hey, replace it when it's undrivable.

hahahahahah that pimp cartoon is great!

Yeah I suppose I will play with my car and see what she does.

I remember learning to drive stick on a junked E model, when the clutch went, it went FAST

Are you talking about launching on the track or on the street?? On the street i generally will rev it out to 2700 or so and drop the clutch and usually almost hammer the gas....but not completely to aid in less wheelspin. At the track i drop it at 4500 to 4700 depending on the track surface that day, and how i fair on my first run, and then ill hammer the gas so to speak. hope this helps.

Mark:

What was your best running with slicks? Also what size were the slicks? When you launch on the street, how do you launch? TIA

With the slicks I got a 2.2 60ft which is horrible. I was not impressed at all. The slicks scretched a little but the car took off like a bat out of hell. It felt like a 1.9 60ft but the time slip shows the truth. I am not sure what you mean by "my best running with slicks", but in the sig is my mods and my quarter mile time. I probably could of been a little lower time on street tires. You can IM me on aol at Gu57ido or email me at SR20SER@aol.com if you want to talk about this. Good luck.
