: Just installed SE-R electric fans!
Harris 11-29-2005, 11:44 PM *** MODS, PLEASE MAKE THIS A STICKY ***
As the title says, I just installed the SE-R fans in my 240, and I have to say that fitment was perfect (no trimming required)! Forget cutting and trimming Altima fans to make them fit in an S13 when you can put these bad boys in with no worries! This is by far the cheapest route if you want to switch to electric fans.
Things needed for this project:
1) Two SE-R fans
2) Two long 12-gauge wires (one for power and one for ground).
3) Whole lot of zip-ties.
4) 30-amp inline fuse.
5) Toggle switch to manually control when the fans come on.
In the process of wiring the ground wire and power wire to the battery:

I took one of the plugs of the SE-R fans to power both of them, and then used that one unit to head towards the switch:

30-amp fuse to be on the safe side:

How I zip-tied the two fans together, and then zip-tied them to the radiator fill-neck. Also note that all hoses and wires above the fans were zip-tied together to clean up the area a bit:

The bottom of the fans, unattached. I didn't feel the need to fastem them down as I didn't notice them moving around. I will try to fasten the bottom down later anyway:

Another part of the fan zip-tied to the radiator:

The toggle switch that powers the fans. This is the best I could do with figuring out where to place the switch:

jrbump 11-30-2005, 02:47 PM nice work, you gonna wire up a temp sensor later to make it automatic?
Yahnozha 11-30-2005, 02:51 PM cool, I did this to my Hardbody (D21) with some fans from a P10, they fit perfectly. I didnt bother with wiring a switch ***, they just stay on all the time ;)
Harris 11-30-2005, 05:25 PM nice work, you gonna wire up a temp sensor later to make it automatic?
Not really. Being that the fans only need to be turned on when you're at a standstill or going really slow, I don't see any reason to not have one extra duty to carry out while driving the car.
Now, some of the people I talked to about this raised a safety concern with how I routed the wires into the cabin. I basically had the wires go from the door hinge into the interior. Would anyone agree that this really is a problem? I've seen many people route wires in like this (although for different reasons), but I've never heard of anyone having incurred an electrical fire or something else due to routing the wires this way.
twyztidmind 11-30-2005, 08:52 PM Nice work, thats a pretty good idea. Althogh i would have never used electric tape, as it looks ghetto and i could fall off after time, crimp connectors work great and there cheap :) Also if you want a cleaner look instead of runing the wire through the door, run it through a gromit on the fire wall, thats what i did with my amp kit, and guages.

thats how i wired them on my S-14.
I think now I would like the switch so i have the option to turn them off at will.
I would still use the ACC. wire because i dont want to leave the fans on and drain the battery

Thanks for your concern about the wiring, but this is just a preliminary setup. During the spring, I'll be overhauling the whole engine bay. Instead of this kind of setup, I'll be going with a sensor (of sorts), that'll turn on the fans based on the temperature of the coolant. It'll turn on the fans at say 205*, and turn them off at around 180*. These sensors come with different sensitivities, depending on your needs. And I'll do the same thing as I did with the setup I already have, i.e., use a 30-amp fuse to keep it from burning the fan motors. So I'll be taking that route eventually.
I should have said it earlier, but this setup I wrote on was not meant to be permanent. My stock fan had taken a crap, and I needed a cooling solution ASAP, so this was the best available option for me at the moment. So if anyone wants to convert to electric fans and have them running until they do a permanent fix, this is a good route to take.

Ok, i was just makin sure, im going to have to go out and put SE-R fans on my 240, thanks for the great idea!:biggthump
charlie2020 12-24-2005, 06:34 PM Im gonna be doing this to my 240SX real soon but im gonna get a B13/14 upper end tank installed so that I can bolt the fans on up top since my 240SX upper end tank took a shit on me, and if your wondering the end tank swap will work I took measurement and there the same.
charlie2020 12-29-2005, 10:14 PM I just finished my Sentra e-fan install today, will post pics up later. couldn't source any P10 G20 fans :(.
Harris 12-29-2005, 10:17 PM Do post pics, Charlie! I'd like to see how you did the end tanks and what you did with the wiring.
Devilstar 01-31-2006, 11:48 PM yeah i would like to see a wiring done with the thermo switch, i know i could search the 240sxforums and find how they did it with a different set of fans, but yeah my lazy a$$ wont :D
charlie2020 02-01-2006, 01:13 AM Im using the stock trigger to turn the fans on and off.
nsn240 02-02-2006, 08:34 PM its pretty ghetto imo... wire them into the fuse box on the right side, and ground out the negative so they are on when the ignition is on. its not too hard to find a power source. I ran my driverside wires through the rubber grommet the the hood-pop cable goes through
charlie2020 02-02-2006, 08:51 PM The cleanest way is to wire them into the existing trigger that way there not running 24/7 while your driving and they are triggered by the ECT sensor when to cut on and off.

Harris 02-12-2006, 10:15 PM its pretty ghetto imo...
Please read all of my posts and see that I said this was a TEMPORARY setup. Soon as I get a replacement DD and when the weather gets warmer, I'll be going with a setup that I've pointed out expressly in one of my my prior posts. Please take the time to read before calling someone out like that. Thanks.
Lookin' good, Charlie! I'll be posting revised pics of my setup soon as I can get to doing it! :)
slipnfall 02-26-2006, 02:01 AM So any year SE-R? Do they at least cool as well as the stock mech. fan did?
Also it's kinda hard to tell from the pics, but is one intended as an AC fan(less blades, runs slower), or are they both identical fans/motors?
Any measurement on the current draw? No problems with dimming lights, etc?
Sorry for all the questions, I'm happy to learn about an alternative to normal Altima fans.
