: 3" exhaust impressions
AntonioG 02-27-2002, 12:11 PM Hey fellow turbo drivers (feels good to be part of the "club" ;)),
I'm deciding on a 3" exhaust for the DET now. Basically the biggest factor for me is muffler. What kind of muffler is everyone running? How's the noise? Does it drone at freeway speeds (75-80mph)?
What about Andreas' exhaust setup? Anyone got any comments on his creation with either the N1 or Dunk muffler? Is either one quieter/better?
I would like something doesn't attract too much attention, but I guess some flash is ok.
Thanks for your help!

N1's are some of the more popular 3" exhausts! They have a nice deep throaty sound to them! They look nice also!
nsracer 02-27-2002, 12:29 PM I had a thermal 3" on my Sentra when it was turbo. Polished can, no tip :D I liked it! Flowed awesome! Noise? My Greddy is louder! This is how it looked on the car (sorry for the bad pic).

SucKit 02-27-2002, 01:10 PM The N1 3 inch sounds ok makes a droning noise if you dont have a cat or a resonator so thats up to you. Another 3 inch muffler that I like is the HKS turbo muffler. The tip is nicer and looks similar to the N1 but sounds different a little, deeper.
SERprise In WV 02-27-2002, 01:11 PM Antonio!
Here's the lower-buck DIY approach, via Dan (AC7880 on this Forum). I'm going this route, and just upping everything to 3".

Low612 02-27-2002, 01:19 PM Antonio ,
I have the N1 its atleats 3in/3.5-4.0out your heard it. i have no cat but i do have a 24in resonator. I had a thermal 2.5 straight through muffler which did me well for a while but it was too loud. It droned about3500-4000 rpms. This is when i had a 2.5inch exhaust and T-25. Ask Luis M. how my exhaust sounded with Thermal. Do it once get a good muffler with a large body and a long resonator if the cat is going to be removed.

ShawnSE-R 02-27-2002, 02:13 PM what muffler? I run my exhaust 3" mandrel out the side with a 30" resosnator. And yes Its too loud
Low612 02-27-2002, 02:52 PM No muffler exit out the side 3inch mandrel with 30" resonator! What the hell! You know all you have to do to quiet that bad boy down is put a folgers coffee can on that thing. It works civics.... =)

kjopi -sleeper- 02-27-2002, 05:14 PM mine is 3" mandrel with a 24 inch resonator, and a gragonfire straight through 3" muffler at the end....it's REALLY loud without the "resonator insert", but with that insert in, you can't hear the exhaust on the freeway at all....it's AWESOME!!!
AntonioG 02-27-2002, 06:32 PM Damn! Thanks for coming through guys! I think I'm gonna go DIY and see if I can save myself a couple hundred bucks, that way I have some left over cash to make myself a test pipe for those drag nights.
v8killer2001 02-27-2002, 08:11 PM What brand are those 30" resonators? The longest I have found are the 18" Dynomax bullet mufflers.
Thanks,
ShawnSE-R 02-27-2002, 08:39 PM Jay,
I have a quetsion for you. How do you like the Fmax kit on the GTIR motor? I am considering a project this year but no one can seem to help point me in the right direction. I would like either a GTIR swap with my current setup "basicaly st 2 kit bigger turbo" or building a highport motor with wiesco pistons and one of those nice intake manifolds. How much boost can you run on pump gas with a gtir motor and how much on race gas? What all has to be changed when converting such as single throtle body to quad? My s3's wont work right? I know I would probably make more HP off the bat with a highport build up but I think the GTIR has a certain cool factor to it and more potential. How are the stock GTIR cams? sorry to go on and on but I would like an opinion from an owner and everday driver. Thanks for all the help. If you cant find a resonstor let me know I can purchase them from an exhaust wholesaler for like $20 and mail it to you. I can not find a non periferated one though. Thanks for the help
Rockwood 02-27-2002, 09:07 PM Chris Allen, AKA Shaggy, runs 17 psi on Cali 91 octane pump gas on the street. you have probably seen the article about his a car in SCC's 400 HP club. he did 350 whp @ around 15 psi on pump gas, IIRC.
v8killer2001 02-27-2002, 09:16 PM How do you like the Fmax kit on the GTIR motor?
***It is badass. You will have to modify the upper IC pipe to align with the plenum inlet, but it is pretty easy. You will need to cut off a portion of the upper IC pipe and weld on a new mandrel bend.
How much boost can you run on pump gas with a gtir motor and how much on race gas?
***Pump gas with an F-MAX kit...I have been told by Mike Kojima that around 18 psi, I would want to run water injection. A GTi-R motor at 18 psi should put down about 380 whp with cams, 3" exhaust and no cat. This is with a Stage 3 wheel and 0.82 A/R turbine housing.
***On race gas, the stock head gasket will hold around 24-25 psi, like the SR20DE. It should put down about 460-470 whp.
What all has to be changed when converting such as single throtle body to quad?
***There is a little rewiring involved. Also, you will need JWT to modify your MSD injectors to fit the stock GTi-R rail. Terry at FTF has my manifold and rail right now. He is prototyping a GTi-R rail for MSD injectors. Maybe, this will be done by the time you are ready to go.
My s3's wont work right?
***Correct. JWT sells GTi-R S3's that are compatible with the mechanical lifters.
I know I would probably make more HP off the bat with a highport build up but I think the GTIR has a certain cool factor to it and more potential.
***Absolutely. The GTi-R is "cool" and different. It has a lot of potential out of the box because of its head and manifold.
How are the stock GTIR cams?
***They are larger than stock 1991 SR20DE cams. I do not know the specs, though.
I can not find a non periferated one though.
***Does that mean it is a louvered core, like a cheese grater inside?
ShawnSE-R 02-28-2002, 12:15 AM ***Does that mean it is a louvered core, like a cheese grater inside?
Thats the word I was looking for.
Yes they are louverd, I cant seem to find any that are not. And thanks for the detailed response. I needed the info. I know Terry pretty well, I live about 1/2 an hour away from him so that will work out awsome. I think I will go check out your manifold if its over there.
And just to make it clear to me. These HP numbers can be done on a Stock GTIR block, stock internals? I believe Shaggy has a built GTIR motor. I would love it if I could run 17-18 psi pump gas and 24-25 psi race gas on a stock gtir motor. I have the turbo I recently installed a Garrett ballistics .60 trim compressor and an .82 exhaust AR.
Big John 02-28-2002, 12:18 AM I just finished welding my two 16" resonator together in preperation of the exhaust. These are 3" perforated dynomax. I got them from summit for around$30 each. I noted that they also had 24', but not sure how much bigger than that they carry. Check em out, I'll be runnin probably just the two resonators at the convention, but I do already have a 3" Apexi dunk that will be going on. I just don't think I'll have the time to get it all fabbed up before then. I'll post all of my impressions when I'm done.

***Yes. You can run 24 psi on race gas. Just don't get greedy. Detonation management is key because at 24 psi, you are on the edge. Even a hint of detoantion is sure to crack a piston or ring land, etc...
ShawnSE-R 02-28-2002, 12:51 AM thank you:)
kjopi -sleeper- 02-28-2002, 01:14 PM sleeper was running 30lbs of boost on a stock gtir motor, and putting over 400+ on the ground >:^D
92SE-R 02-28-2002, 02:16 PM Sleeper's also blown up a lot of motors. So what?
