Well, now the car is making a strange humming sound at idle. It goes up in pitch with the revs, but disappears around 2500 rpm either because it actually goes away or because it's drowned out by the engine. When I pop the hood, it seems to be coming from around the alternator, but I can't be certain.

The only other symptom is that my dash lights seem ever so slightly dimmer at idle than when the revs are higher, but this may be my imagination.

Anyone have this happen or any ideas what it might be? I have an appointment with the stealership tomorrow morning to see what's going on but if someone here has a good idea what it is lay it on me.

did you install some audio equipment like amps? Could have a ground loop causing alternator whine.

No new electrical or audio anything. Would this alternator whine happen with the radio off?
