How do you tell when your starter is going out? I've been hearing a bit of noise in the morning when I start the car. Like a weir whine but only when I'm starting the car. It immediately stops when the car starts to run. It doesn't always do it either. Mainly when the car is cold. Idea's? And if it is the starter, how hard is it to replace?

Ah...the famous starter squeal, I've been there a while ago. The starter was still good for a while though, the noise was just annoying.

Mine eventually went out, I was able to tell, for a whole day, everytime I would start the car, it would take longer and longer to crank over, until all it did was click, then no click....dead :(

Mine has been going for like two years now. It just used to make a small squeak when it was cold. Now I get a full out AOOOOOGGAAA like a 1920s car horn every time I start the car. I'm ordering one from Andreas. The starter isn't too hard to replace. The high port cars are much easier, though. My low port has a big bracket that supports the intake manifold, and makes it difficult to get to. You just need a little patience and some cool ratchet extensions / u-joints. Multiple joints in your arms would help, too. :D

Its not hard to change it, I've lost count how many times I changed mine, but its a 2 person job...and I always ended up under the car holding the starter, while the other person screws in the bolts :mad:

I have had starter squeal for like 3 years. It has become like part of my car. I call it my little squirl! It honestly has not bothered me at all. My car starts evrytime! Thank God!!! Serban has heard my car do it many times!!:D

guys my squirl is dead. It is amazing how things happen. My starter failed. Oh well! I will miss the little guys!:(
