Hi

Check the archives ,there are a lot off info about this tread.

You make no more power, you turn the car into (what California calls) a gross polluter, and the car becomes very raspy and louder (think fart can on a Honda).

In fact, removing any of the smog stuff does anything for power gains, so you are basically polluting for no reason other than thinking you are making more power- kinda like Smoothdaddyfig!

Might as well get a Tornado and shove it in the intake with an E-Ram - at least that way you can say you spent a couple hundred dollars to go with none of that power.

Then again Lee Iacocca once asked "How much clean air do we really need?"....

gsr20det: are you talking about a turbo car? or N/A? i would think that there would be a significant gain on a turbo car, with the decreased backpressure...... and you would definitely see gains on any motor if your cat was old and clogged to begin with, but thats not the issure i guess

On a turbo car it can make a big difference, but on an N/A car, it does not improve flow. Our cats are very high flow. I've seen them out-flow a very nice aftermarket exhaust through some backpressure testing done for an upcoming article in a magazine (I can't be too specific and let the info out before the article).

Just let me say that if you are making less than 200 hp, don't worry about swapping out/gutting the stock cat. If you are making more than that, get a Random Tech or other hi-flow cat.

*IF* you have a race car and you are going to gut/remove the cat, make a straight pipe to replace the cat or weld a straight pipe into the cat for the best flow. A gutted cat is worse than a good/unobstructed cat in terms of flow.

I think removing the cat and using a straight pipe is something that a few have tried with poor results, so ***** else has bothered to do it. I'm not too sure personally, in theory it should create better flow, especially considering how old our cars are becoming (if you own a high port anyways) and how I'm sure that the cat is not as efficient as it once was. I'd say try it at the track and find out for yourself. Don't use it on the street of course or your car will stink and be real loud. If you try it, let us know how it turns out.

Does a Random Tech or other hi-flow cat really out perform a stock cat? Anyone ever done any testing?
