Anyone ever fix something like this? I went to town on it with the wire wheel, I was amazed how much came off....
SiCrew 12-17-2005, 05:56 PM ohhhh wow, you need to cut and weld wow

can i use your welder? REALLY APPRECIATE IT :P
yeah Im thinking I need to cut me off some decent nx rear wheel wells and weld them on, and get some nice gauge sheetmetal for the other part of the car. Im waiting on the body forum guys , and a day off to goto a real body shop to see what i should really do with it.. But im all ears...
Cujo_se-r 12-17-2005, 06:31 PM that sucks
piratetrucker 12-19-2005, 07:04 AM Dude... A little warning in the header would be nice. I almost had a heart attack LOL!
DanniNX 12-19-2005, 07:58 AM for a cheaper alternative, fiberglass! just remember to get the metal underneath well cleaned and epoxy primered.
paNX2K&SE-R 12-19-2005, 08:51 AM Those damn t-top drain tubes wreak havoc with the rear rocker area :(

you ever see a how to or something? I am completely unfamiliar with fiberglass...
Bjorn 12-19-2005, 12:22 PM you ever see a how to or something? I am completely unfamiliar with fiberglass...
it's just fabric and glue, it's really pretty easy. You just have to get the resin mixed right and the metal clean. pm Toolapcfan for more info - he's a big advocate for doing this and has done his rockers iirc

you can take a composites weekend workshop for ~$200 and get first-hand experience from professionals. It's a lot more helpful than anything you'll learn on the net
Big John 12-19-2005, 02:26 PM Man, that just gave me one of those really heavy gutteral feelings, like getting kicked in the nuts. I'm no body guy, but I wish you luck. If you feel like bringing the car to Florida, I'll TIG the panels in place for you for the cost of consumables. ;)

You'll need a sheet of fiberglass, some resin, some fiber reinforced body filler and metal net of some sort.
Just get rid of all traces of rust, primer the bare metal with some epoxy primer, lay the fiberglass sheet on the inside of the panel and the net on top of that (on the inside) to hold it in place. Then mix the resin and brush it in and on the fibers. Allow this to harden a bit and then put another layer of fibers and resin. After this, use the filler to get the shape right and from there it's just bondo, spray filler and paint. Try to get the shape as close to right as you can with the fiberglass to minimize the filler/bondo.
For areas you can't reach from the inside hammer the edge of the hole in so you can lay the fiberglass on the outside without making a bulge on your car.
As for quality and weight it's up to how much you wanna pay. You can get chopped or woven sheets (or carbon sheets for a few extra hp ;))and you can get acrylic or epoxy resin. I think woven sheets with acrylic resin would be best for you. Epoxy resin is lighter and more flexible but that's really not important in these areas.
If you have any questions feel free to ask.
Killdannow 12-19-2005, 10:12 PM again you guys come thru. I sure hope this is my answer, because otherwise im loooking at having to part it out.
Needless to say, my first ttops - I do not want to part out. She hasnt even seen a summer with me.

Thanks bud, you da man. Unfortunately , thats a helluva ride.
Killdannow 12-20-2005, 03:04 PM body shop guy says the whole quarter is doomed. "itll be back in 6 months, unless you cut out the entire quarter and weld a new one in. See that seam ? Your gonna need a new rocker too. Just the quarter panel, just to put it in would be 17 hours ~ 1000 dollars. Thats if you can find one. : Course I can find one. : Well itd still be a thousand bucks in labor. :walks away, life in shambles :P :
ahhh where are thou restoration shops.
DanniNX 12-20-2005, 04:13 PM Try the fiberglass then, you can't lose. What seam? pic?
Killdannow 12-20-2005, 05:37 PM the first pic. Yeah im gonna take it to a couple more places for shits and giggles then probably just blast inside that hole wtih epoxy primer as best i can
fiberglass patch it
and hope for the best. at least there wont be a gaping hole in my car.
geezer 12-21-2005, 04:15 AM this mayb of some use 2 u have u checked the strut towers?

(edit)just seen the link is already on ur forum pretty white posted it(edit)
DanniNX 12-21-2005, 12:35 PM sandblast the seam and then epoxy it and it should have no reason to continue rusting.
Killdannow 12-21-2005, 03:49 PM than god, the strut towers are beautiful. If I had to do that, honestly id just run away. I think i can handle this rust removal epoxy and patching though, and it shouldnt be too hard on the wallet.

I went and was looking for the stuff today, and I found the fiberglass patches. I found the long strand body filler too, that you use with it. But I couldnt figure out, there seemed to be all kinds of hardeners and resins in that section and nothing very specific.
The resins and hardners were all seperate and nothing seemed to go together.
