I'm tearing apart stensland's old SR20DE tonight that he believed has a spun rod bearing. I want to determine how bad the damage is and if the crank can be used again or not with just new bearings. Any tips on this process?

Here's an AIM conversation that Mike Jez, SR20 rod bearing spinning King :D, and I just had:

Ben98SentraSE: yo, got an SR20 with a supposed spnu bearing. Thought you'd be the guy to ask this to. :-) How likely is it that the crank in an SR20 with a spun bearing is salvagable to be used again? I have no frame of reference. We are tearing down the bottom end of the motor tonight with the aid of the FSM and see what we can see.
SR20DE98: I never seen one that had a bad crank
Ben98SentraSE: really? nice :-)
Ben98SentraSE: and coming from you that means a lot :-P
SR20DE98: USUALLY U can make out the color on the old bearings.
Ben98SentraSE: ok
SR20DE98: and just order new ones
Ben98SentraSE: cool
Ben98SentraSE: I'll let you know about it
SR20DE98: usually
Ben98SentraSE: Willy is driving the Civic btw
Ben98SentraSE: put some anti-smoke shit in it and it's doing ok
SR20DE98: but the oil will discolor the damn bearing.
Ben98SentraSE: what should I look for on the crank? Just like cams right- pits and scratches?
SR20DE98: yes
Ben98SentraSE: k
SR20DE98: it should be extra smooth
Ben98SentraSE: aight
SR20DE98: how long did he drive on it like *** ?
SR20DE98: I put like 1000 miles on mine and crank was good
Ben98SentraSE: he bought the car with the spun bearing s I dunno
SR20DE98: really hard noise ?
Ben98SentraSE: he said it made a lot of noise, yes
SR20DE98: cause my DET I had to get the crank turned
SR20DE98: machine shop
Ben98SentraSE: he didn't drive it though
Ben98SentraSE: how much that cost ya?
SR20DE98: and get overside bearings
SR20DE98: like 100 bux
Ben98SentraSE: cool
SR20DE98: compared to 700 for a new crank
Ben98SentraSE: people spin bearings and just throw away the motor
Ben98SentraSE: Can I cut and paste this conversation into my forums? Is that ok?
SR20DE98: sure
SR20DE98: I have done bearings in 5 diff cars now
SR20DE98: including my Audi that I bought for 500 bux and sold for 6000 dollars cause the idiot didn't wanna do bearings and was told he needed a new motor
Ben98SentraSE: got the engine on a stand in my garage. How long will bearings take?
SR20DE98: air tools ?
Ben98SentraSE: nope
SR20DE98: to take the oil pans off and shit
Ben98SentraSE: I've taken the pans off other cars many a time
SR20DE98: cause thats the MOST consuming part of the whole deal
Ben98SentraSE: that's easy
SR20DE98: I know its just time consuming
Ben98SentraSE: ok, then pretty easy then
SR20DE98: ok it should take U a hour to do em all
SR20DE98: clean the mating surface- bearing to rod
Ben98SentraSE: Cool. Gotta measure though and buy the bearings
SR20DE98: and the crank journal
Ben98SentraSE: I will. My dad is the man on that stuff :-)
SR20DE98: ok ALOT of times the bearing is just beat right in the center of the 2 sections
SR20DE98: cause its a 2 piece bearing
SR20DE98: so U can measure the outsides of it
Ben98SentraSE: k
SR20DE98: and get the correct grade
Ben98SentraSE: I got calipers
