: power steering to manual swap info?

I want to swap out my p/s rack for a Sentra E manual steering rack in my Se-r. I know I can use my inner and outer tie-rods, but I am trying to figure out what I am going to do to make a tensioner for the water pump, since the p/s pump is the tensioner. Has anybody done this? I was told that I could get a Silvia alternator and bracket and put the alternator in the place of the p/s pump. Has anyone done this, and if so, where can I get the alternator and all the pieces I would need to do this? If there is an easier, or cheaper solution, please let me know.
Thank you.

There's a guy posting on the SER mailing list that is making a power steering eliminator 'kit'. He basically buys an off the shelf Nissan idler pulley assembly and attaches it to a block of aluminum that he has machined to bolt in where the power steering pump was. I think the price was about $115.

Can't remember the name or the specifics but you might try and post over there and see what comes up.

FYI... The Sentra E rack is 4.21 turns lock to lock while the SE-R rack is 2.74. If you opt for the E rack you will have a noticible decrease in steering response, I remember reading a while back that the steering effort from an se-r rack without the ps pump is comparable to the effort from an E rack. I was actually considering swapping a steering rack out of an se-r into my E.

Can't be as defined by your statement that the non-power steering is 4.21 turns vs 2.74. That's quite a bit of mechanical difference.

If you want to see what the difference would be, put your SE-R into neutral and kill the ignition and coast. It is quite a difference even at higher speeds (I just tried this over the weekend). DON'T DO THIS ON A PUBLIC STREET, USE A HUGE EMPTY PARKING LOT! ALSO DON'T USE THE BRAKES VERY MANY TIMES WITH THE ENGINE OFF! (unless you want to find out how hard it is to stop this car without power brakes).
