: OH MY BLEEEDING EARS!!! Need exhaust HELP PRONTO!!!

I recently installed a 3ARacing muffler. It is a straight thru with a perforated inside tubing. I ran 2.25 inch exhaust with a fast flow CAT , no resonator and MY EARS ARE HURTING SO BAD!!!! I SWEAR I WOULD RATHER DIE RIGHT NOW THEN EVER RIDE IN THAT CAR AGAIN.
It seems worse inside the car. Its a big Echo chamber in my ride, man!! My questions is:
1- Will a resonator help out alot?
2- Im thinking of just getting a louvered one becuase I heard the other perforated ones dont deaden the sound that much.
3-I'll be juicin soon, will this 2.25 be sufficient?

Im going to get this fixed tomorrow but I need to know which route to go. Any tips are appreciated.

MY POOR EARS!!!!!  :( :(

Try putting in a glasspack in as your resonator. I saw that another person on the forum did this.

From what I heard, the 3ARacing mufflers are not mufflers at all. They are pretty much just a shiny casing that resembles a muffler. :D

SO, what I would do is find the longest possible NON-louvered glasspack that will fit after the cat and have the shop either weld it in or put flanges on it so it can be removed in the future.

Also, does the muffler have a tip on it? I will assume it does, but if it does not and the exhaust outlet is behind the rear bumper fascia, the exhaust tones will resonate under the car and cause the interior sound to be deafening.

Been there! Done that! Not an enjoyable ride when you can't even hear yourself think!

Good luck!:p

Hey, go here for an idea of what I did. It might help you.

I had that muffler before Mr. Fig took property of it, for me it wasnt that loud. I currently have an 18" louvered glasspack resonator with my 2.25" piping. Here are some pics of the 3A when I first got it put on my car.

Hey Figgy,

FWIW, I recently installed a Magnaflow twin tip muffler and had the same problem. Then, after doing some reading on se-r.net, I tried the Walker (Thrush) Magnum perforated core 24" glasspack, and it barely made a difference. (The car was very quiet @ 75 mph in 4th, but droned from 60 up past 75 in 5th.)

So, I installed a 26" louvered core, and the sound level is finally decent - slightly louder than stock. I know that the louvered core glasspack inhibits flow somewhat, but by this time I decided to take a minimal? power loss for some reduction in the noise level. I'm happy with the compromise.

If you were running a stock exhaust diameter, I would ship off the Walker Magnum to you, but it's for a 2" setup.

Just my $.02 - gs

I have 2.0" piping :D (1.6L). I am not sure that 24" would fit though... Are you sure it's not 22"? How much would a shop charge to just install a resonator? When I got my piping done the shop installed some weird 18" glasspack and my exhaust is alittle rapsy.. Ofcourse that maybe because I have headers and scoobie muffler :D . I was wondering if switching to longer glasspack would change the tone...

Why not just run the stock muffler? From what I have read it is actually a decent muffler. I plan on headers and a bigger cat-back/mid. section but running it with the stock muffler to maintain the sleeper look. Any input would be appreciated. Thanks.

Nope! The Thrush is perforated. The louvered glasspack will definitely help with the sound, but it has been stated that the louvers also screw up the exhaust output flow causing unwanted turbulence, etc. when the exhaust tried to pass thorugh it.

It just depends on what you want. I am satisfied with my setup. This is my family car as well, so it had to be some what tame with the kid and all. My wife does not seem to mind it either.

The only issue I have is at about 68-70 MPH, it drones out in the cabin of the car.

I also purchased a 3" rolled angle cut tip that is 100% stainless and will hopefully have the welded onto the Borla this weekend.

Just go to a shop like meinekee and ask them to hook you up with a resonator, it will help alot. I talked to a guy at the meinekee shop and he told me not to waste my money on the thrush glasspack because his resonators were made out the same material, and he was actually saving me money by telling me that. By juicing if you mean nitrous, then that should be a fine pipe diamater, but if your boosting, then most people like to go with 3" which will provide you with more power and quicker spool up for the turbo.

Do what? Meineke! Shmeineke!

How much less is he charging than $14.99? I purchased mine from the local Jegs High Performance shop a few months ago for that. They are now $15.99 online through Jegs.

If he is selling a comparable NON louvered glassback to the one listed here,
Thrush 25" Magna 2 1/4" in/out Glasspack Muffler #24201, for less than that and it is of same quality, then I say go for it. But I find that hard to believe.

DAMN!!!

Andrew,
I just got back from installing an 18'' perforated resonator. Unfortunately it cost me a arm and a leg at $60 but needless to say I can hear clearly now!!:)
Andrew, I would have definitely taken that off of your hands though. But now Im broke and my ears function properly.
Thanks to everyone for the help!!!!!
WHAT A RELIEF!!!!
Im not sure of the brand I got. Its one of those Borg/Warner or something like that. Oh well.

Time for a Dyno!!!!

I have looked into the thrush glasspack and i do know that its around 15 dollars plus roughly 5 bucks or more for shipping. The guy at meinekee was going to install a resonator for 40 bucks with install and resonator itself. If i ordered the thrush and had him install it, he said it would be 30 bucks for the install. If its made out of the same stuff, then why should i have gotten the thrush to have to dish out a few more bucks and wait for it to get here?? A resonator does nothing but quiet down the exaust flow, its essentially a straight thru pre-muffler. The thrush may look cooler, but i dont get too many compliments on how the underside of my car looks. :) Just offering up what i experienced. Thanks for the suggestion of the thrush though.

You're absolutely right, however these "Midas" fellows will tell you anything in order to sell you their product. I am not doubting you got what you wanted, but you gotta keep an eye on these guys...
