Ok well, I'm in the process of learning more, and more about boosting. My question is why would you vent your wastegate? I remember the 400hp club issue of SCC, the Eclipse that was in there had his wastegate dumped out the front bumper, and they said at high boost levels it would shoot out flames. Can someone please explain why? Please excuse the ignorance.

the flow of exhaust coming out of the wastegate and the flow of the exhaust coming out of the turbo are at different sppeds, temperatures, and the flow out of the turbo is whipped up from the turbine. by divorcing the wastegate, you have much smoother flow down the downpipe, as it doesnt have that turbulent juncture of post-turbine exhaust and wastegate exhaust, and have less backpressure, as there is less actual gas moving through the exhaust. i dont know exactly how much HP this is usually worth, but for most people it probably isnt worth the extra noise.

beware though, it is pretty damned loud when venting to atmosphere under full boost (unless you are running so much boost that your wastegate stays closed, usually not too good for the motor) and it makes a nasty, almost farting noise. open wastegates dont sound very pretty.

can internal wastegates be dumped into the atmosphere?

Yes, internals can be dumped to the atmosphere, as for how well that works, I have no idea. I just know some DSM guys that do that.

i know the BB DET has an internal wastegate, but what about the T28 and T3/T04E? is it possible to use an external wastegate if the turbo has an internal one (not using the internal)?

Mine is vented also for a t40e/t3. Pros yes in the tunnel or wherever. You can hear the wastegate open LOUD. One bad thing is the engine gets very dirty if you dont redirect it anywhere. Mine is just open with nothing redirecting.

So how hard would it be just to vent it say out the fender at the bottom? Just basically running a tube?

If you go to www.Roadraceengineering.com in their exhaust section they carry flex tubes that you can purchase for use as a dumptube. You can direct it anyway you want and are perfect for WG Dumptubes. Just thought I would reiterate what I just said :)

Mike Mager just recently put a resonator on his divorced wastegate, made it sound like a regular turbo car. of course, the muffler guy didnt do a good job of welding on the hangers, as they fell off. back to open wastegate for mike!

Where did he position the resonator? Also, what size is it or what car is it from?

I was talking to Mike Kojima about this and he said that the sound went from "sounds like ass" to "just bad".

You said Mike Mager's car sounds like a regular turbo car. Do you think the resonator made a huge difference?

made a pretty big difference to me, i couldnt hear the wastegate when he did his burnout 25 ft away, and when it went down the track, you could hear the slicks peeling out more than the car itself. so, i think it makes it pretty quiet.

the resonator for it looked like it sat right next to where the stock location for the cat and resonator would be. looked like crush bent 1.25-1.5" piping. this was in a B14. and the pipe dumped directly after the resonator straight down, right under where the rear floorboards are. the resonator looked like the biggest one that could fit in there.
