: Flashing Airbag Light
evo95ser 03-07-2002, 08:20 PM Everyone,
The other morning, the coldest of the year, the airbag light in my 95 SE-R started flashing... it hasn't stopped in the last few days. Chilton's and the owner's manual say to take the car to a dealer. Personally I just want the light to stop flashing... I really don't care if the airbag is broken... unless its going to deploy on me while I'm driving. Any ideas on an easy fix... other than putting a piece of duct tape over the light?!?
I hate airbags... my Dad once hit an expansion gap in the highway in his Lincoln Mk 8 and thge airbag deployed...just from the small bump...he nearly crashed trying to stop the car!
Thanks,
Marcus
subhuman 03-07-2002, 09:10 PM I've got a 96...my light has been flashing for well over a year...haven't disabled the light, but I am fairly certain you're in no danger of it accidentally deploying.
ThomasSr20 03-07-2002, 11:54 PM i have a 96 Se-r, after i took out my stock steering wheel and change to Momo (race) steering wheel. The light keep flashing on me so i took out the gauge and rip the airbag light out and problem solve.
This will not effect your car, it just get in your nerve when u see it.
metro_se-r 03-08-2002, 01:44 AM I've had this problem before. Last summer I drove to Myrtle Beach for vacation. On the way back, the light started flashing. Here's what I did. I took it to a dealer so they could check it. And they did. They called me back and told me my airbag sensor needs to be replace and that it would cost me over $400. I told them to go ***** themselves and that I would come pick up my car. When I got into the car and started it up, the light initially lit up (like its supposed to do) but then went off and didn't blink. Basically all they did was reset the sensor and tried to rip me off for $400. Problem solved and it didn't cost me a penny.
Apparently this is a problem with all 200sx and sentras. All the dealer has to do is reset the damn thing and they know it, they're just trying to make money on it. I would recommend you try the same thing with your dealership, just make sure they don't charge you just for looking at it.
If this doesn't work, then just take off the gauge cluster and remove the Air Bag bulb. Its really easy and won't cost you anything. Hope this helps.
evo95ser 03-08-2002, 08:34 AM Thanks guys,
I had a feeling this might be a common problem! I'm just going to go in and take out the bulb. I was thinking of getting an aftermarket wheel this summer anyway... so I'm not about to $pend $$ for a sensor for something I don't even want on my car.
best,
Marcus

Driven97 03-08-2002, 10:53 AM Oooh, ooh, this happened to me too. If you pull the fuse, it will stay on constantly. I did this at first. I also had the dealer reset mine once, they wanted $700. Funny thing is I got the car back -no light. Sounds like the same story. If you take out the two screws just above your gauge cluster, pop out that trim ring, and take a couple of more screws out (4 I think?) you can pull out your whole gauge cluster. Then just a 1/4 turn on the right socket and out pops the airbag light. You can also see a cool "hot muffler" light with no bulb behind it while you are in there. :D I left the bulb in the socket, just in case no blub would trigger another mil. It's been sitting behind my gauge cluster for a couple of months now, no longer able to bother me with it's insidious blinking...
:D
Westanizer 03-08-2002, 10:18 PM Wow my first post and I can help! I have been on the mailing list since 98 and have just started lurking around this forum a couple of months ago. With the drivers door open turn the key to the ignition on position. Reach down and push the door switch for the courtesy lights 5 times within 7 seconds. Airbag module should go into a diagnostic mode and the light should start flashing codes. Let it go through the routine and then turn the key off. The light should operate normal after that unless you have a bad sensor or module. If it continues to flash then you probably have a bad sensor somewhere. Good luck!

metro_se-r 03-09-2002, 04:08 PM Wow, how do you know that?
Westanizer 03-09-2002, 04:30 PM www.alldatadiy.com. I am one of the fortunate few who has had to do the Horn TSB. (Horn activates randomly). I made the mistake of hooking up my battery when my airbag was out and triggered a code. Luckily, the same website with the TSBs also has all the info on the airbag systems. I sure was making all kind of new friends when my horn would just start honking for no reason!

96stse-r 03-09-2002, 06:26 PM Oh man! Put down your screwdrivers, get out your FSMs! There's the method for resetting it there. My airbag light did that about a year ago and I reset it according to the instructions and it hasn't come on since. $700 freakin' dollars?!!! You gotta be kidding. Effin dealers.
1. Open driver's door
2. Turn ignition switch from "OFF to "ON"
3. Press driver's door switch at least 5 times within 7 seconds after turning ignition switch "ON".
SRS is now in Diagnosis mode.
4. "AIR BAG" warning lamp operates in diagnosis mode as follows:
1. on (7 sec) off (2 sec) on (3 sec) off (2 sec) on (3 sec)....
Intermittent problem has been detected in the past.
2. on (7 sec) off (2 sec) on (3 sec) off (2 sec) on/off (.5 sec)
system has problem and needs to be repaired.
If its just the first pattern the light will stop blinking. If its the other, you need service...or rather your car does. If you unscrewed your bulb, then YOU definitely need service!

$120 for the diagnosis please
evo95ser 03-09-2002, 07:09 PM Ok Thanks for the instructions guys...but...
When You guys refer to the driver's door switch...what are you referring to? Wes's recommendation says the courtesy light switch... what is this? What am I supposed to push?
thanks in advance,
Marcus

Driven97 03-11-2002, 10:08 AM That's got to be one of the most useful things I've ever read here. You guys are the bomb. I think I'm going to put my bulb back in today.
And thanks Chris, yes, I need service, but you already knew that.

Sorry, I'm just extra sarcastic due to cabin fever. Some guys get over this by getting laid, but that's not a cure for me. I gotta race dammit!

Thanks Wes!
No more flashing light... I think to frigid night last week just tripped the sensor or something... anyway it's back to normal.

marcus
Westanizer 03-13-2002, 10:08 PM Cool, glad it worked for you. I was absolutely shocked when I found out how much a dealer charged to clear the airbag light! -Wes
