I notice that the NASA CCR doesn't require any SFI rating on gloves. I also notice that many high-end gloves don't even have SFI ratings. Is there a reason for this? Any reason to NOT buy a set of non-SFI gloves if they're of good nomex and leather? Will NASA retain their current policy for sometime to come? Also, anyone know what SCCA requires by chance?

I just received my handy dandy 2006 GCR yesterday so let's open her up.

So, leather garden gloves would work? Nice.
I'm racing in these:

So you guys wouldn't have reservations about running non-SFI gloves?

I would probably get them. Might as well match, right? :D

Just be very aware and informed of what you are buying.
If you (God forbid) catch fire, guess what you are going to be using a lot....your hands.
I personally love my SFI Simpson's. I treat them as nicely as I treat the rest of my gear and helmet (which is very nicely).

I agree, but maybe many of these high quality gloves just lack the certification, not the actual protection. Trying to discern that now.

I'll check my Sparcos later. I wonder what the big hang up is?

More info guys. Many F1 and CART drivers use reverse seam gloves that SFI will simply not certify. Food for thought.

After re-reading, a point I wanted to make.
I love my Simpson gloves.
I do not love the SFI Foundation for reasons I will not get into here.
Stick with major manufacturers and you normally won't go wrong.

I have information that says that Sparco got their gloves FIA-approved for the reverse seam, but the certification has since been rescinded.

For racing I wear full double nomex lined SFI-5 gloves. For hotlapping I might wear ones with just a leather palm but a nomex back.

Makes sense to me.
