AFAIK the seal is inside and you have to remove the striking rod in order to replace the seal.

damn i have the same problem. the rod inside on my tranny though looks to be lubricated with tranny fluid. i placed cardboard under my tranny and i never see a spot of tranny fluid down there being leaked. i also want to change this seal...is it hard to do and how is it done?

AFAIK I thoguht the tranny had to be removed and the striking rod has to be taken out, that involves removing the gear stacks and such. It is not an easy task if you have not taken a tranny apart before, but with the FSM I think most people could work through it.

Depends.... For one you will save big $$$ if you have the tranny out. Call around and tell them what is leaking and what the labor will entail. I am sure they will give you a ballpark figure. It shouldn't take them more than an hour.

And actually taking the gearstacks out is not a big deal, it's taking them apart that is a PITA. FOr this they do not have to be taken apart.

It looks/sounds like the striking rod oil seal is bad. Replacing this is listed in the FSM as something that can be done without removing the tranny from the vehicle. The FSM does not say you have to drain the tranny fluid. You just have to drive a small pin out of the "yoke" that holds the shift linkage to access the seal. Then it pops out and can be replaced.

Looks like a 10 minute job with the right tools and the car on a lift. I've done it with the tranny out of the car -- no biggie. But then again, it really should not cost much to have a shop do it. If you do not have a very narrow drift to drive the pin out and the right size tool to tap the new seal in, it might make good sense to have a shop do it.

you have to remove the end piece. There are two pins in there. Your gonna need two different sized punches. I've never done it with the trans in the car so i wouldn't know how hard it is. If you have the fsm or access to it it would help.

wouldnt i just be able to add some stabilizer into my gear oil? or maybe use some spay copper gasket around the striking rod, let it dry for a couple of min and push it in there? i just asked around and looks to be around a 300-400 dollar job :(. i cant get another tranny for that price.

Check again on what this would cost. It's a 10-minute job, my friend, with the right tools. Any honest shop should be willing to do it for 1/2 hour labor if you buy the seal from a dealer for under $10 (probably).

Anybody in the LA area want to help out our friend here?

He is right abou tit being cheaper than that. The FSM diagram he posted shows what looks like a very easy job with the correct drift punch... The tranny does not have to come out like I speculated....

yeah, when i spoke to the tranny shop guys i explained to them the tranny would have to come out and be taken apart as Wes speculated. now that i found the same striking rod page on my fsm i see how easy it is. im sure i can rent the correct drift from autozone or something. thanks guys, i was worried there for a second :D.

Well I jumped the gun on that, I was thinking about the seal when I had a tranny apart and did not consult the FSM.... Glad it is an easy fix!

Just FYI, its near impossible to get the drift pins out while the tranny is in the car, I've done it, but its a REAL pain in the ass. You're better off having someone in the car holdint it in whatever gear makes the pin more accesable...IIRC I used a 3/32" punch for the middle pins. Do you have a harborfreight there? If you do, their punch/chisel set is on sale right now for $10...hope this helps.
