: Spec Clutches
Blue93G20 01-28-2006, 10:33 PM Alright i've done some searching on these clutches here on the forum and found that a lot of people hate these things, but i also see that most of the threads are over 2 years old. So i wanted a fresh opinion on the clutches. I'm looking at the Spec stage 2+ which is supposed to hold 295 torque. I'm debating this or just saving for the difference of a ACT XTPP and Street disc. The last thing i want to do i buy another shitty clutch like the ones made by clutchnet or buy a puck clutch so these are the only options i'm seeing right now, so let me know what you guys think. Turbo guys what are you using.
I guess i'm just curious to see if they are still crap i don't think i'm willing to risk buying another POS clutch just to try something new.
jer_760 01-28-2006, 11:50 PM I believe that JGY's clutches are just rebadged Specs, and there are alot of people praising the JGY clutches.

Zexel 01-29-2006, 12:33 AM I really like the feel of my Spec pressure plate. So I'm going to use it with a Clutch Specialties 6-puck. Although, I did break 2 of the Stage 3 disks in a row, with the same identical problem. Not boosting over 8lbs on either clutch.

What disc are you using right now?
Zexel 01-29-2006, 12:50 AM Clutch Specialtes 6-puck. The disk that has the patented design for the springs. Haven't ran it yet.

dxpxe 01-29-2006, 09:09 AM im lookin at the spec stage 3 sprung 6 puck, but i do a lot of daily driving soooo idk maybe i will get the 2+
zipstrips 01-29-2006, 10:07 AM i had spec make a custom set for my 3sgte celica. stage 2, it sees boost pressures at 12-15psi max so far, over 1k miles so far. no issues yet. very nice pedal feel too.
all of the se-r's have ACT cutch sets, no problems to report here either.
dxpxe 01-29-2006, 10:12 AM i just have a gti-r running stock boost with no solonoid so around 7psi or so but of course i want a clutch thats a little stonger for future mods or track runs. The ACT is a great option of course but spec is over 100 bucks cheaper
coach 01-29-2006, 10:37 AM clutch net for the whole thing or ACT. I have had three spec clutches that blew up on me. Two were on GTi-R setups (AWD trans) and the other came with a motor I got that went in a friends car. It lasted about a month on boost, it was stage 2. The GTi-R ones were stage 3 setups.

chimmike 01-29-2006, 11:01 AM i'm sellin the spec SN573H clutch kit brand new if anyone's in need of a beefy one.
TurboTank 01-29-2006, 01:49 PM i just did a spec 6 puck sprung hub in my classic. one thing i noticed is that the pedal pressure is about 1/4 that of my act street in my ga16 200sx. it holds awsome but it also grabs like crazy and can get chattery on release. other than that good clutch for street imo
Blue93G20 01-29-2006, 08:49 PM Yeah i'm still a little to scared to have the possible issues with the Spec clutches i'm pretty sure i'm going to stick with the ACT.
dxpxe 01-30-2006, 01:36 PM found some decently priced ACT clutches on ultrarev.com for those of u lookin for a quality clutch at the moment
I've got a Spec Stage 5, can't complain at all.
chimmike 01-30-2006, 03:52 PM jamie at powertech swears by them. he talked me into getting the one I'm selling.
Only reason I'm sellin is because i no longer have the se-r
i have the 6 puck iron disc and is also from Jamie.he says the mustang guys use these with no problems.
93BlackSE-R 01-30-2006, 09:09 PM I've got about 7k on my stage 2, with no problems as of yet. We'll see how it holds up under boost though.
maybe Spec fixed the defects that were plaguing them a couple of years ago.
srbybre 01-31-2006, 10:48 AM im gonna go with an ACT but a buddy of mine has a 1990 240sx with a swap putting out 452 at the wheels and he went through 3 Spec Stage 5 clutches. he says they stand behind their product like no other and every time he blew one up they ave him a free one. he got tired of swapping them all the time and is running an HKS twin plate GD PRO right now. their clutches arent great but they have great customer service according to him.
jlequipment 02-04-2006, 11:33 AM Run as far away from a spec clutch disk as you can they are great to begin with but will leave you stranded sooner then you think i have been threw 1 stage 2 and 2 stage 3 disks in less then 6000 miles on the other hand the presure plates seem to be great i am curently useing an act nsd109s disk with the spec presure plate and all seems well so far i havent been able to drive it on dry streets yet
