: Replacing the Antenna

I was at a local auto parts place running errands a couple of weeks ago and I found this really cute 18 inch rubber antenna with "universal" mounting. I thought this would be a nice aesthetic over the OE 3 foot whipper-snapper piece that performs amazing acrobatics in the drive through car wash. Plus, it was a mere $10 dollar investment, so I picked it up.

When I decided to get it on, my first concern was that the mounting position of the OE antaenna is slightly down on the side of the panel from the plane of the hood. I am not sure if the new antenna could mount at such an angle and stand up straight. Even more concerning was that I could not determine how to remove the current antenna. Its fixture is behind the engine firewall and I could not find remote access to it from under the dash.

A rather wild option for me would be to completely remove the antenna and put the new one at the rear of the car roof. I am going to the body shop in May, so I could get the old antenna hole covered up then ( or maybe persuade them to do the whole job ).

Has anyone replaced this before ? If so, how, and what did you replace it with ?

is it a powerd one? if you want to change it, your **** want to get the Fuba Style (like on VW's) and put it on your roof. its not *to* hard, if you have an FSM and can get your headliner out..and down mind cutting some metal away from the bracing...

i got one on mine, and i just took out the fender one. i would love to have the hole filed though. either that, or a cover or something...

I just ordered an antenna mast on e-bay to do the same thing. (the stock ones are obnoxiously long).

Does what you ordered include all the mounting hardware? If so, you might have some trouble getting it to align up correctly as you mentioned. You should be able to just remove the stock mast with a small wrench, and see if the mast from your new kit fits in the stock mounting hardware. That would save a lot of time.

I am hoping teh one for a 200sx that I ordered from e-bay will do this and allow me to just screw it in to the stock mount.

I agree about getting a FUBA if I go for the roof option.

How did you access the fixture on the fender to remove it ?

i actually just unscrewd it. the base is still in there... you probably would have to take out the inner finder liner and then unbolt fom the insde..

I put the little rubber antenna on today. It looks really nice.

The antenna from autozone did come with mounting hardware and cable but it was obvious that if I tried to use it it would not line up right. When I was cruising I-5 earlier this week I saw a fellow that put it on his pulsar. It was sticking straight out to the side *yuk*.

I took RallyKids advice and removed the mast to see if I could use the existing fixture for the mast. What I found is that the mast screws in a male like fashion. Contrarily, the rubber mast was female. I thought I might use a threaded bar to join the two but found that the oem mast was threaded 12-24 (1/4?) while the rubber mast was 6mm.

I took the plunge and bought two 6mm, 50mm long bolts ; cut one along the sides with a dremel to make a tap ; with the other I cut the hex end off so that it was a threaded bar.

I tapped the oem fixture to 6mm and joined the new mast with the orginal fixture. It was a little scary doing this so close to the paint job. Its a nice looking piece and it stands straight up. The whole job took me about an hour including going to the hardware store - not bad!
