Lots of potential 'project' cars on the classifieds, even one SE-R.

SE-Rs (and NX2000s :D ) make very competitive production - and even Group 2 cars. A production SER showed up at Perce Neige a couple of weeks ago and set some very fast stage times - right with a Group 2 Type 'R'.
Good wheelbase, torquey, geared low, fairly tough and come with a stock LSD.
At the clubman+ level, rallying tends to separate the driver from the equipment. Case in point, former (1970s) Canadian champion (and ice WIZARD) Jean Paul Perusse in an old Group 2 Golf. Set fastest time on a 44km stage at Perce Neige - a national rally run on snow & ice with 61 entrants. Faster than a couple of Cosworth Escorts, Mitsu EVOs and at least two Group N WRXs.
