Im at a point in my swap that I want to take the tranny apart. The genius who owned the car bbefore me rounded the tranny drain plug, and then after drilling a hole and breaking an Easy out off, I am out of options.

How difficult is it to seperate the case. If you need a pic, I can get it. There are around ten 12 or 14 mm bolt holding it together. I removed them, but it didnt seem like it wanted to come apart. Any ideas are appreicated.

I assume you have a B13 or B14 tranny. There is a round plate on the rear of the tranny which has about 6 10mm bolts if my memory serves me correctly. That has to come off. It will reveal the rear end of the main shaft. It is held in place by a snap ring that is around 3" or so in diameter. Remove the snap ring. At this point the case will be able to slide off. You will have to angle it once it has cleared about an inch in order to work the case off. That's about it.

The tranny case will not slide off after the rear plate along with the thrust bearings and snap ring is removed. the case is pressed on the rear end of the main shaft. It takes at least three people to remove the case. Two to pry the case off, while one, using a shop hammer or equivalent pounds on the shaft so the case will come off. I have already disassembled my tranny and it was not easy.

I think that circumstance was unique to your experience. It does not take three people to take the case off, just ask anyone else who has done it. The case is not pressed on. You do have to work the case off since it doesn't just slide right off like the B15/P11 tranny--it has to be angled in such a way to be removed.

True, that was unique in my case but that is what I had to go through just to get the tranny disassembled!

I usually like to work around the case to free up the RTV. Once you do that, it should come up with a slight side to side action. Then just change the angle of the dangle and hold your mouth right to clear the stacks.

So, how difficult is this Big John? 1-5. I dont want to make it fubar, but I need it apart to remove the stripped drain plug. What to do.:(

Taking the case off is a 2. It's a 2 because sometimes it can be difficult to get the case moving initially and you might have to get creative.

Overall it is pretty easy. Remove the snap ring first, then pound around the case with a rubber mallett. It usually works the RTV loose and then you can remove the cover. As Big John pointed out, you may have to work the angle or go for the whole Michael Jordan tongue out of the mouth for it to work right.
