i found a classis SER for sale, how do I spot if the car has had a tranny fix or no problem with 5th gear pop out? I don't think I can test drive it on the highway for 1 hr with 5th gear.

Cruise at about 45-50 mph in 5th gear and blip the throttle a few times. If it doesn't stay in gear, it has a problem.

I don't think there's a sure-fire way of telling if it has had 5th gear replaced other than the owner's honesty.

So, how much percentage of SE-R had that problem?

To fix it how much would it typically cost?

So, how much percentage of SE-R had that problem? All 91-92 SE-Rs, NXs, and G20s are prone to this problem. IIRC the problem really is a shift fork that gets bent. This in turn wears the 5th gear syncro and then it pops out. The cost of the parts to fix it is not much, but it requires removal of the transmission, obviously.

It costs the price of a new tranny if you dont do it yourself.
I have had 5th gear pop-out for 4 months now.
I learned to live with it!!
Just dont go racing down the street doing 120 in 4th racing an IS300. I spun a bearing that way.
Now I have a JDM engine and only go up to 100 in racing situations. Till I bust my tranny Im not fixing it. Which then I would just purchase a newer transmission.:

unfortunately, i believe all the models were affected. i just think that the later models simply havent developed the problem since they arent as old. my 93 has 102k on it. the previous owner says he NEVER had any major problems with it. No 5th gear popout i say? he told me no. well just recently it was pointed out to me that the tranny has been dropped before from the red sealant seapage around the case. nissan doesnt use that red stuff. there are a million reasons the tranny may have been taken out but 5th gear is strong possibility. i may have it fixed i may not. all i know is my 5th gear stays in place, for now!

my car is a 92 and has no 5th gear problem, signs of a fifth gear problem and the tranny has never been dropped. My car only has 70k on it though so i dont know, i think it has a lot to do with the way the car is driven as i dont drive the car in city ans either did the previous owner.

If your worried about 5th gear buy my car

No. My '91 SE-R went 180,000 miles with no 5th gear problem; although I don't know how it's been in the last year or so as I sold it in September 2000.

Only 4 months! ;) I have been living with mine for close to 4 years! And, my 92 only has 77K on it, it started at like 45-50K. I will not get it fixed, i think its like $1000 to do it. Your best bet is to pick up a 95+ 200SX tranny, change the speedo pinion (i think thats what it was) and you should be fine. not worth it to fix it IMO. Then again, i dont even use 5th gear on my commute to work, so it may be different for you guys who have a nice ride to work!

Well guys for the ones that are crafty and are good with turning wrenches can buy the fifth gear pop-out kit from Courtesy for about $300 and do it yourself....Here's a link..

Is it dangerous when the 5th gear pops out while driving?

Se-r. net said that the 5th gear problem seemed to occur when constant ouside force was put on the shifter when in fifth gear. That pretty much means, that if you lean on the shifter with your hand and rest it there when in 5th gear, then you have a greater chance of bending the 5th gear fork.

i wonder how many cars with pop-out have worn out looking shift knobs.. or replaced shift knobs..

at 123k my 92's orig shift knob still looks nice and i have no pop-out..

'93 SE-R, 90k miles, Never has popped out of 5th yet. Knock on wood.

My 93 NX2000 developed 5th gear popout at about 85k miles. My 91 SE-R never had it, and it had 115,000 miles on it. Tom Paule's SE-R never had popout either, and his tranny had over 200,000 miles on it, and that's with a turbo for about a year, driven hard its whole life and being used as a full blown race car for the last year or so. 3rd gear finally broke a couple weeks ago at the track, but it never had 5th gear popout. :)

I spent 1200 to have mine fixed. It started at about 116k miles, lived with it for almost two years then fixed it. Some people would rather buy a used trans with that money, but I figure either way, your spending 1200 bucks, so whats the difference. Besides, you could buy a used one and have the fifth gear on that start popping down the road. If your doing it yourself then thats a different story.
