Hey all,
I got some used 92 cams from a member off of here for a GOOD price. Well I was bored today, and figure I would head out to get some cleaning components to clean them up a bit. Well they turned out sweet... I wish I would have taken before pictures.

http://i49.photobucket.com/albums/f254/xxtokesxx/1998%20Nissan%20200SX%20SE-R/92%20Highport%20Cams/IMG_0864.jpg :eek2:

They had a bit of surface rust, oil, dirt, etc.

I have one question though. After cleaning the intake cam I saw a bit of pitting on the #4 lobe? Well the forth one from the knocking pin... mainly on the side of it... There is some on the exhaust cam also, but I don't think I'll be installing this one.

I don't think that there is that much pitting but:

Is this much pitting a problem???
Are they still considered usable?
Are these typical results from such old cams?

Here are some pics along with the questions...

Any leads and information that you can offer will be appreciated. Thanks Guys

How deep are they? If they are bad it could just increase wear on the rockers and be a little noisey. But, I wouldn't worry about it.

I would say barely past the surface... Probably no more than 1/8 - 1/16 mm.

Okay, I will be installing tomorrow... I am going to dinner with the female so no car shit today...

But I picked up a new torque wrench, a new shop light, new dremmel bits for sanding... shop towels, and some rubber coupler hose for tomorrow... even bringing the kerosine heater in the garage...

Gonna finish the rest of the CAI install... 9am-9:55am
paint the headers when I have some free time...
sand the secondary pipe down.....

and finally, Put the intake camshaft in... 10am-?? (take my time)

I have one more question, just for MY own peace of mind:

So its gonna be alright installing this cam even with the 1/8"-1/16" pitting on the lobe? It's really rough like the metal flaked off...

This is just my first time working on a nissan, and I'm just getting some butterflies... I just want to make sure I don't do any irreversible damage or wear anything down that is essential...

I hope you all see this :(
Thanks Guys
Ameen...

Also, you only need to install the intake cam. The exhaust cam is the same as the one you currently have in the car. Atleast you got yerself a clean a$$ exhaust cam you can put on display or something. ;)

Good luck, man. I would only install the intake cam, it will make it a easier, faster, and safer safe. I assume you have the procedure on the cam swap? I did a few of them without problems then I broke a cam because I didn't have it properly seated. Snapped it in half while torqueing it down. Ever since that happened, I always make sure they're sittin right.
If you have any problems you can pm me.
Woot Woot!!

How do you make sure they're sitting right? Whenever I've done it, it seems like the cams want to bind on one end of the cam and not go down completly no matter how I try to put it in.

It's not the install that has me worried... And I'm only installing the intake cam, but its the ~ 1/16" pitting that I was worried about... The pictures make it seem like surface material, but its actually IN the lobe. The consensus is that it is okay... Tomorrow will be the defining factor... I'll keep you all posted...

I have had no leaks... you think I should replace my valve cover gasket while I'm at it?... Since I'm replacing my old VC?

Also, I don't know if anyone else is going to do this install anytime soon but here:

Yes, definitely replace the valve cover gasket, also don't forget to rtv the "humps" on the gasket.
