: AEM Or Place Racing
silverser99 03-12-2002, 11:49 AM I was thinking of replacing my stillen wai setup with a cold air The aem is nice because you can get the bypass valve with it but I still cant find it for my application (99se-l) any suggestions?
someone told me to get the place racing one and when it starts raining hard just take off the cold air extension part and run it like a short ram setup
sr20ser1997 03-12-2002, 12:44 PM i was in the same boat as you about a week ago.. aem doesn't seem to make the cai for 95 and up se-r's. so i decided to just go with a place racing.. it is a 3" pipe from what i have heard (i dont know for sure *** mine wont be in till this afternoon) and you can buy the aem bypass valve alone and install it yourself on your place racing cold air intake.. even if aem did make one for my 97 i would still go for the place racing..price wise $199 for place racing and $409.95 for the aem for the 93-94 sentra.. I just dont see spending $400 for a cold air intake..thats insane.. Do yourself a favor and get the place racing. AEM bypass valve in 3" diameter is $47.95 from summitracing.com. part number is AVM-20-403s...hope this helps
DizkokidD 03-12-2002, 01:03 PM Thats what i did on my 94.. i recently took out the bottom protion of the pipe and just added the filter.. im ordering the AEM bypass valve as we speak err type that is...
but will it fit.. since it adds and extra inch to the piping? or does it?
Yes-Ser 03-12-2002, 01:47 PM AEM does make an intake for the lo-port, they just list it as fitting the 93-94. Several people on this board have found them for cheaper than $400.

I remember hearing the AEM bypass valve being recalled due a bad design, shit was breaking off and getting sucked into our intakes. Is this just one of those rumors or do you cats know if it was true??
I've been trying to trade some folks some stuff for a CAI and the bypass valve would be nice if it worked.
You can change a CAI to a WAI in like 10min but, after a while it gets old.
OnyxEros 03-12-2002, 06:49 PM i got's the PR CAI in a group buy for 160 shipped. aside from the cutting in the fender the PR unit is top notch. I have seen the AEM on nissans and hondas and they look equally good.
Go for the cheaper one, you won't go wrong
btw don't by the bypass valve unless you live were rain gets over your tires constantly and you enjoy driving through rivers it's just a waist of money

sr20ser1997 03-12-2002, 10:46 PM well i just got my pr cai intake installed tonight..what a pain in the ass.. the pipes didn't quite line up right, i had to cut the hole in my fender bigger to make up for the error with the pipes.. You definately need 2 people and about 2 hours to put it in(atleast mine) as for the aem bypass valve forget about it.. the stock splash shield on my car will work exellent.. If your splash shield is anything like mine you wont need the bypass..
NismoNx2000 03-13-2002, 09:42 AM Where can i hook up a place racing cai for a good price?? I saw it on Rollhard performance website for 187 for red or blue and then 192 for silver finish...is this as good as the price gets?? thanks in advance...
OnyxEros 03-13-2002, 10:02 AM yes it's a good price
check to see if there are any group buys (i don't think there are) over at b15sentra.net and groupbuycenter.com

Monsoon 03-13-2002, 11:35 AM be careful on who you buy the aem cai from (if you go that route). i was ripped off pretty badly on a very good advertised price.
never shop at www.supercarauto.com. they are the company that pulled it on me.
VVLtrain 03-13-2002, 11:52 AM Ok this my be a dumb question but here goes. Are CAI's for 95 low port 200sx se-r and up the same as 94 low port classics? If not, does that mean that the 94 classic low port CAI is a major oddball part? (ie only one model intake can fit this model year car)

VVLtrain 03-13-2002, 12:09 PM uhhh. one more thing. as far as all the CAI's out there... do they all have/come with some sort of Venturi fitting built in or before the filter to increase intake air speed? I believe that's what make JWT pop a pop as opposed to a $30 cone filter with MAF fitting you can buy on ebay. I remember people using their PR CAI WITH the JWT POP. Am I talking garbage here? If so go ahead and flame me for my ignorance. I am "thick skinned". :) Just looking for some more info.

DizkokidD 03-13-2002, 12:29 PM UH.. i got a 94 and its the same as the 95 so its not odd hehe.. my car was born in May.. its Bday is coming up and i think im going to buy it a little present.
And onto your other Question.. i say this.. WHAT!!
anywhoo. im not using and expesive airfilter or whatever.. i have a kn filter made by S n B racing or something like that and it works for me.
Im thinking of getting the HKS to use with my CAI but im not sure on this one...
what are some thoughts on this set up??
VVLtrain 03-13-2002, 12:48 PM Dizko,
I heard that the HKS filter is not that good. Actually I heard it sucks. But that isn't from me 'cause I've never tried it myself. i would stick with the K&N style filter element. There must be a reason why that kind of filter is so popular. Also I was told that the HKS one is bacically a piece of foam so it's not realy that durable.

DizkokidD 03-13-2002, 01:08 PM my friend tevs.aka Sunny, on this forum has it and all you do is wash the foam and dry and install.. but yea it doesnt filter as good as the KN but it does get about 3 to 4 more HP.. i think thats what he said.. im not really sure.. but i dont know cause i really dont want to buy a 140 filter when i wont feel any difference.. bleh.. it was just an idea though..
Juan or John..
nismo91 03-14-2002, 11:17 AM I'm not sure where everyone is from. But I just want to say that CAI are safe during HARD rain. CAI are only dangerous when you submerge your whole half of your front end under water. What I mean by that is you are basically dunking your air filter unto a water. Well, if you do that then your CAI will be sucking up WATER.
I have a PR CAI on my NX2K and I've gone to hands free car wash with under carriage spray. She's still working!!! Now I'm not suggesting you do the same. I am able to do this because on my NX there is a piece of soft plastic on the bottom that is protecting my air filter. Also, if you are using K&N keep it oiled. Remember oil repels water. So a little splash of water is ok because the oil on the filter will just repel it.
I hope this helps!
Steve
silverser99 03-14-2002, 11:27 AM Hmmm thats a good point thanks steve.
DizkokidD 03-14-2002, 11:34 AM i havent tried the airfilter that pRi gave me with the CAI... it seems like its too big.. but anywhoo.... i think ill go by the pop charger from JWT.. is it 140 worth it??
nismo91 03-14-2002, 11:40 AM oops sorry I missed one. Someone mention about PR CAI not fitting well. I thought that at first but you have to adjust the rubber sleeves to give you more lenght. One my PR CAI both sleeves where in too far on the pipe one each end. After I adjusted it I had enough lenght to cover the area. Also, don't tighten everything right away, twist the housing left or right to give the CAI the right angle and distance. Once you are comfortable how everything is seated then start tightening all the screws.
Trial and error! baby that's what gives you knowledge! :D
