Who here is running a S15 in there car? What are your thoughts about the engine compared to the S14 and what are your thoughts about the tranni hold up.

Were planning on putting one in a 510 soon, but debating on the 5 or 6 speed.

Well both the S15 and S14 or very good motors with very good trannys. I don't have one personally ( yet ) but both will treat u good. But 2 major benefits that make the s15 more desirable is the fact that u know when u buy one it isn't older than 1999 unlike the s14 motor it could have come from a 97 silvia or a 95 who knows. If I'm not mistaken during the s13's production it also came with a red top engine so u don't really know nor can u guesstimate the wear and tear. The S15 motor obviously will be in better condition and closer to its stock horsepower figure.

I don't know about a 510 but I plan on doing the swap in my 97 240sx and the swap isn't much different than the S13 and S14 with the exception of the transmission wiring ( so I'm told :D ) I guess in all it depends on what u want. U probably will be able to find parts slightly easier for a S14 since its older but finding( and buying ) parts for the S15 motor really won't be that much different. Both motors and trannys hold up well but like I said the S15 would be a smarter buy since it would definitely be a newer motor.;)

It's not really about the newness (is that a word?) of the engine. It will be fully worked on (down to the oil pan!). The plans are to try and run low 11's to mid 10's in a 510 street car. The main concern we had was the gearbox.

I heard that the S15's 6 speed is very weak under high boost from some cats in Australia. They said it's basically a S14's gearbox with slimmer gears to make it a 6 speed.

If your going to do a full buildup then why don't you just get the S13 motor and build it up. VTC is overrated. If you plan on using sprockets then you will have to do lots of changes. :D

Yeah their right, I have a couple of Japanese friends. Most have swapped out the 6 speed tranny for the S14 5 speed tranny. The S15 transmission does have weaker gears because they are shorter. But if your trying to hit 10 to 11 sec timeslips you may want to swap a 6-speed sequential tranny but 6G's is alot of money. ( I'm still saving :) )

PS - Oh but TX180SX is right spending the money on the S15 is the same as spend the cheese on a S13 or S14. Since your gonna rebuild the entire motor then it won't matter what year u get. I contemplate S14 or S15 all the time for that reason.
