: Sneaking a Mex "Classic" in?
zbillster 03-13-2002, 11:23 PM First, lemme say this is all just a wild hypothetical fantasy "what if' kinda thing, and of obvious dubious "legality" (depending on your concept of law and international free trade, of course).
But suppose one wants a brand-new B13 with 0 or low miles, which are still made as 2002 Tsuru models in Mexico (alas, with the 1.6). http://www.nissan.com.mx/
And suppose one drives one across the border, removes the Mexican badging, either swaps out the VIN numbers with a U.S. 91-94 B13 or uses a barely running U.S. version for inspections, licencing and such and transplats the plates/stickers over, and enjoys many happy years with his new B13?
Okay, I'm gonna try to wake up now. Discuss among yourselves.
;)
97 Black SER 03-14-2002, 05:20 PM Put down the crack pipe.;) That is an interesting idea. I wonder if they would allow it over and what you'd do about the registration in mexico.
zbillster 03-14-2002, 07:35 PM Yeah, someone spiked my crack last night.
I actually saw one here in North Texas today (probably driven by a Mexican national). You see them with Mexican plates all the time in South Texas, so GETTING one across is no problem. KEEPING one across would be the challenge! You'd have to disguise it as a U.S. model and use either another one for tags and such or go through the trouble of changing out the VINs and using U.S. exhaust parts to meet emissions. They "retail" for about $15K new with A/C according to the Nissan website.
It's just kinda frustrating that my favorite car is still being manufactured brand-new 11 years later 500 miles away, but I can't get one.
skyliner 03-18-2002, 03:57 PM Talk to some of the Mexican's working construction in your area, maybe they can sneak one(2002 B-13) across with the next batch of illegal migrate workers.
nismo91 03-18-2002, 04:55 PM Dang! what an ideeeea. Only if they came two doors. The web site had a four door.
I'm sure someone had done it already. Come forward you have been busted! :D
Yosho 03-18-2002, 05:20 PM Gee... you mean like my 1993 "2000 GSR" b13 se-r from Mexico? Sure, it doesn't have the modern b13 headlights but it does have the '92 us spec motor. =)
93BlackBird 03-21-2002, 08:00 AM The only good I could see coming from this would be a low miles GA motor. Not much if you look at it compared to the PITA it would be.
SK_Racing 03-21-2002, 12:29 PM Well I wouldnt really want a 4 door classic, but that Almera looked pretty good to me. Too bad we couldnt get that car over here. It looks pretty sweet, especially the red sport edition. Get it over here and drop a nice little SR20 in it and be good to go. Wonder if you could find one with a blown motor if you could import it. Just a thought.

zbillster 03-22-2002, 11:45 PM I actually prefer the 4-door aesthetically to the 2-door (more balanced profile). Plus the Mexican one probably wouldn't have those stupeeed motorized seat belts!
Ahhh, I'll just keep an eye out for a clean U.S. one, I guess, if there are any left.
93BlackBird 03-24-2002, 09:41 PM DOT are such a bunch of assholes that if you didn't have enough money like motorex and you want to do it legally you can't do it.
C-los
sr20ser1997 03-31-2002, 12:06 PM people swap vins from mexican cars all the time.. alot of old vw bug collectoers go to mexico and buy brand new bugs.. drive them across the border swap vins and bam a completely restored 76 bettle.. just my .02
93BlackBird 03-31-2002, 12:53 PM The main word in my post was LEGALLY..lol. We can sit around and swap vins all day, but the day that a DOT or High Patrol really wants to know your arse will be busted..lol

Well it's got to be possible as mine is titled.
RySE-R 1 04-01-2002, 10:02 PM Whoah, that Mexican website is groooovy. I especially love the running man and the cool techno music (click on Sentra and you'll hear it). Yeah, about the Tsuru, I think i could be done easily enough, and I don't exactly think the authorities would be knocking down your doors. It's not like it would be obvious like a Skyline GT-R running around terrorizing the streets.

I actually like my motorized seat belts
93BlackBird 04-03-2002, 08:14 AM Possible yes yosho, people have GTIR's in this country too. Plus depending on when this guy brought it in the rules could have been differant or maybe it was inspected and the car checked out as far as bumper, glass, brake lines, headlights and tails. Hell he probably just switched all the lights out since he could find them in a border town in the US with DOT symbol and just tied them on..lol (j/k with ya). Since the chassis was imported here it will already meet chassis specs for this country wouldn't be profitable to have a weaker chassis for other countries and a stronger one for this country. Its gets difficult when you want to import a car that has no sister here. Then things get expensive or illegal :)
I really don't see why it would be a big deal. I know people that have had Canadian cars here. Why not Mexican? Call your local DMV or insurance agent and see what they say. I'm sure it's not too hard. Do it! Buy one! :)

No doubt, but that was my point... it should be possible to import a mexican car if the same body style was sold in the US. Now, a GTiR would be a totally different story. =)
