Well I guess it's to be expected on a ten year old car, but I was still surprised when my exhaust rusted through the other day. So now I'm perplexed. I have an autox coming up next Sunday (3/24), and I'm not sure if they'd have an issue with it. So now I have about a week to decide if I should just get it repaired or go ahead and get a whole custom exhaust. What I need to know is what can I expect to pay for a custom exhaust, and also what ID should I go with? I don't plan on doing anything to the engine except a WAI so would 2 1/4" be ok. Would 2 1/2" be too big? TIA

Parson,
Naji Dahi's (http://www.geocities.com/n_dahi/) and SE-R.net (http://www.se-r.net/) are really informative.
The classifieds here on the Forum are a great place to find used parts such as this one FS: 91-94 Sentra - Greddy Exhaust (http://www.sr20deforum.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=13233)
According to most, 2 - 2 1/4 is best for those with basic bolt-on mods. Though some have had success with diameters as large as 2 1/2.
I went through a similar situation recently with my '92. I ended up purchasing the "Top Speed" cat-back ( polished stainless b-pipe and muffler" from Courtesy Nissan (http://www.courtesyparts.com/) It's beautiful, but can be loud at times. Ask for Brian when you call.

i bought the car which already had a pacesetter catback exhaust, so it had the 2 1/4" mandrel bent piping from cat back. the muffler was not to my liking so i swapped in a dynomax ultraflow with a borla 2 1/2" tip. i also threw on a thrush glasspack to quiet down the exhaust. so far, so good. the muffler itself was approx. $50, glasspack $15, and borla tip $30. i bought all of these part from www.summitracing.com. the install was done by a local meineke for $115 - i know, it's prob a bit much for such simple work, but i didn't have time to shop around. i know for a fact that i'm not alone with this setup. from what i have read and what i have felt from my own car, the setup is pretty solid. the only issue you may run into is finding the proper piping, esp if you're looking for mandrel bending. summitracing and jcwhitney both sell bends, but you'll have to bring it to your local muffler shop to have them welded on to straight pipes. i hope this helps! good luck!

if you have a muffler you can go to a shp and they can mandrel (if equipt) bend to an exhaust for like $50+

Well, I went to a united muffler here today and he basically quoted me 160$ for cat-back 2 1/2" with resonator. That's not including muffler. Is this a decdent price? I figured a custom exhaust would be significantly less than an aftermarket piece, but adding a muffler to that would put it about on par.

I thought so too, especially after reading Naji's write-up, but least you got a qoute. One of the few shops I found that could create such an exhaust wouldn't give me an estimate. Fearing the worst, I went elsewhere.
If your not counting your pennies, $160 is fairly to $189 that Courtesy Nissan charges for their 2.5 polished stainless b-pipe (includes resonator).
