I'm buying a sentra, most likely this weekend to use for racing.

My choices are a modified 1992 SE with aftermarket cam, header, intake, light flywheel, and rebuilt engine. Or a 1991 SE-R thats mostly stock.

My main question is whats the difference between a SE and SE-R besise the bigger engine, 40 horse power, and limited slip?

well the SE-R has larger sway bars, as well as seats that are a thousand times better(well you have an ITR, its like your seats compared to a GS-R, there is no comparison) the SE-R has shorter gearing, rear disc brakes, and probably some other stuff im forgetting..... get the SE-R:D

I would go with the se-r because the lsd will help out with autocrossing and I feel there is more potential with the se-r.

Other differences are four wheel disc, different tail lights, and different interior(seats). Thats all I can think of.

Unless the SE-R is a poorly maintained basketcase, get it. It won't be much, if any slower than the modded SE.

To bring a GA16DE car up to SE-R specs would be more trouble than it's worth if a SE-R is readily available.

You want the SR20DE and LSD, as well as the four-wheel disk brakes and better seats. Those are notable bits, and they make a difference.

The SE has SE-R seats.

You won't regret it. Plus it will out torque your Type R until about 6000 rpm... :D

Seriously though, how much work would it take to get it to be a mid 14 second car?

Its only going to be driven to the auto-x track and to an ocassional driving school, so we only need 2 seats, and noise doesn't matter.

If we striped the interior, put sticky tires on it, header and intake, and advanced the timing, how close do you think that would get it to a 14.5 1/4mile?

It would *probably* come pretty damn close, depending on how stripped is stripped, if you know what I mean.

Just a thought: If you take out that rear seat, then welcome to Street Modified when you go autocrossing!

Yeah if you had sticky's with a CAi and a header I think a mid 14 sec. car would be about right.

How built is the 289 in the Mustang jond?

What do you mean by sticky tire? Kumho V700 or something like that? They really aren't great at the strip since their sidewall is so stiff. They are best used when turning, not going straight.

lol... ah yes... the money pit :)
I had a engine builder build the 289 I'm running now. I did a gtech on it a few years ago, and adjusted for drivetrain loss, it was pumping out around 330hp.
Right now its in the shop getting the cowl repaired. It has to be cut out, fixed, and welded back in! Right now, the entire car is in pieces. Sad. I also have been collecting the pieces to turn it into a shelby gt350 clone. I have the hood, and front apron, but haven't put them on yet. Depending on how much I have left from the cowl repair, I might get new 16'' torque thrust D wheels for it.
Anyway.. money pit. I love it though.

Yeah thats what we were thinking. There doesn't seem to be that many option unless you go with a 15'' wheel.

Check out Pats site for his former car. He coaxed it to a best time of 14.56. Street tires, full interior. Nice site, lots of good documentation.

Awesome link! Thats got some really good info in it.
For the most part, it looks like the new limited slip, and header made the most difference.

I'm excited as crap. We're going up to DC in a few hours to take a look at the car.

Yeah, basically the SE was a regular Sentra that they put the SE-R seats into, and the SE-R trunk with the extended tail lights. The SE-R has a better suspension, obviously the better engine and a different tranny, the SE did have the nice SE-R seats though. But it didn't have the SE-R's 4 wheel disc brakes or the LSD.

The SE really isn't worth it. :)
