Hey guys, first time poster here. I own an 89 nissan pulsar, but I'm looking for an NX 2000. I was just wondering what you guys recommend to look for when buying one, like certain areas prone to crapping out, things like that. About the model years, based on what I can gather, theres not much of a difference between all the year nx2000's, just interior things right? Thanks in advance.

watch out for the trany. If its a maual most likely you will has 5th gear pop-out. Thats when the gear syncronizer goes to shit. Also watch out for motor mounts, they without a question suck. Also the driver side "A-Pillar" might start to rust at the bottom. All in all my 91 has been a wonderful girl to me. Pretty good when a stock 2K w/91K can keep up with a superchared thunderbird (SC). My other 91 is a screaming NX, they respond to mods great. You could always try to find one with a solid roof...more ridgid=better handling. Good luck!

Uh huh.

Anyway, chewck the CV boots. Check for leaks. Worn synchros (on the manual tranmissions). The usual stuff.
ALSO, you might want to set up an account with carfax. That way you can research the history of the car.

And last but not least, be sure to check out the SR20DE.NET (www.sr20de.net)
Tons of information on ALL SR20DE powered cars.

I bought my NX blind folded. Didn't know what I was getting into except that I knew it had the engine I wanted (SR20DE). So far she's been really good to me. No problem what so ever and I hope to treat her with special treats this summer.

So just check what Sub said and your usual engine inspection and you'll be one happy NX owner. ;)

Look for rust around the third brake light.

Peel back the carpet in the trunk around the suspension towers to look for rust.

Look for moisture in the trunk area around the spare wheel, because the rear lights sometimes leak.

If the car has t-tops and has been run hard, look for stress cracks or separation around the seam at the base of the apillars (supporting the windshield). You have to open the doors to see the seam.

Generally - turn everything on, make sure it works. That includes wipers, heater, AC, indicators, everything. If anything doesn't work, include that in your list to the seller as to why the price should come down.

Check for panel alignment.

Look for paint where it shouldn't be. For example, one car I looked at had paint overspray on the driving lights. The driving lights are added after the car is painted, so it indicated that the car had been in an undeclared front-end accident.

When you're really serious about the car, take it to a trusted mechanic to look over, give it a roadtest, put it on a lift, do a compression test, etc. Anything he finds there can either be used as grounds to reject the car, or gain a more favourable bargaining position for you.

Good luck!

BTW, I've inspected/driven/bought many NX2000s for people in my area. Can you tell? ;)

What years had 5th gear problems? I thought only 91-92?

Anyways, also check this, I'd goto a carwash with it on a test drive, watch for T-Top leaks... the seals are about $150 each from the dealer so don't get killed on that...
Also my '93 somone snuck in the NX1600 wheel, I kinda figured that but at the price ($600) I wasn't worried about it, it should have the leather steering wheel, if not that could indicate a problem with perhaps a wreck? (Mine was I knew that buying it though).

I'd also check the rear hatch window seal, mine leaks a hair there also....

Best of luck and enjoy the car when you find a good one.

A couple more things to look for...

If it has power windows, make sure they
work. I've had (and known a few others)
mine fail. The gear strips and you have to
buy a whole new motor. $275 from Nissan!!
or $75-$150 from the junkyard. Check that
the hatch struts work, they are $75 each from Nissan or $35 from Autozone or Big-A

Good luck.

No not only 91-92 's have 5th gear pop out but 93's as well. Mine had the problem before I got it. But the previous owners insurance covered it and he got a brand new transmission installed at Nissan. You don't have to replace the trans to fix this problem but it made me feel good to know that my new baby has a brand new trans in it and if all goes well I won't have to mess with it anytime soon! LONG LIVE THE NX!!!!!!!!

Cool info Aztek, also someone mentioned power windows - make sure they work after the car wash too!!!!! If the previous owner likes to play car stereo installer and doesn't replace the plastic water barrier it will cause some issues down the road!!!

Whew - that makes me feel better....

I like the leather wheel MUCH better...

Also I just don't get why nissan does that...
Why make the NX the same 91-92 then make all kinds of changes for '93 the last year for the car - there had to be a great cost involved! (The wheel, differnt door lock assbly's etc.)

They did it with the 200sx too.... cornfusing aint it?

Trying to boost sales. IIRC, the leather steering wheel was a dealer option. Which would explain why they're not on all NXen.

a cv boot covers your conatant velocity joints(CV's) which one is near the spindle/wheel bearing and the other is by the trannsaxle on each side: they allow the drive shaft to spin while turning, etc at all times, theyre kinda like u joints to rear wheel drive vehicles, the boot holds a bunch of grease for the bearings in the joint. when they tear the grease leaks out, youll see it on your wheel and suspension components, dependant on your drive habits, they can still last awhile, once you start hearing clunking or clicking, usually when you turn, or if you can wiggle your halfshafts(axle), they are bad i recommend replacing the whole axle, its not that expensive and its easier. you can get axles w/ lifetime warranty from pep boys for like 70 bux....good luck!

what is the effect of the grease leaking out?
i need a little more info ***** i think u have *** found the source of my problem
*** i have this problem with my braking. it's affecting my abs, and if it's constant velocity that is screwed up, thatwould mean the two wheels aren't spinning properly together and this would affect abs right or am i *** totally lost here? and i have noticed some squeeky noise when i turn my steering all the way these last couple days
