: Stregnth of SR20. Possable 2.0 for Miata!!

I know the damn thing is strong as hell (DET's over 400whp, and even DE's) Is it reliable for 330-350 everyday HP. Say full boost 4-6 times a day?

Here is the reason I am asking. I found out Mazda has a motor VERY simialar to the SR20, but on paper seems a little better. It came in some 626's in europe and japan.

86mm Bore 86 mm stroke

36mm intake valves, 30 mm exhaust

Forged crank rods and pistons (pistons might be hyper, confliction info).

Exhaust ports identical to 2JZ supra motor in size and angle. 9.5 compression (if you can find turbo one it is 8.8) Same size bearing journals as Small Block Chevy. Main girdle. Piston squirters. Agressive cams, dual valve springs. Valvetrain is good up to 8800 rpm's.

The motor made 170hp 6500 160 ftlb at 4500 in NA form and 260hp and 283tq with 13.5psi on the RARE turbo model. Only difference between turbo and non turbo is the compression on pistons. Same cams, same type of pistons. Everything the same.

I am considering replacing my 1.8 with one of these instead of building a 1.8 (built ones still have problems with spun bearings) Apaprently the bottom end flexes a bit. The motor will require some fabrication to get into the miata (custom mounts and work on the tranny bell housing some.) Electronics is a No briainer as I am getting 720 injectors and have a TEC II already wired in stand alone mode. Making the bellhousing and mounts is not hard either. Someone with a probe with only JE pistons (9:1) did 430hp at 19psi. Not sure on turbo but the AF line looked like crap. VERY rich. He said only about 15 degrees total advance. Some race gas some 93 octane. He was using a SDS.

Another nice thing is that you can use the old 2.2 turbo probe crank (F2T motor) and it fits right in. Custom rods and pistons with 89mm bore and you are over 2.3L. That is in the future. I think I can get this motor over 400hp in stock form.

Just wanted to get Ideas from yall since this seems to be a similar motor to yall's great motor. I was actually thinking about SR20 but I would have to run in the Outlaw class ( I am about to get serious in the IDRC and the drag circuit in general. I think this motor is a good step.

BTW RX7 Trans and 8"rear end about to go into the car. Finally a strong drive train.

Sounds like a great motor! It is a "Square" motor, meaning the bore and stroke are identical. some of the strongest motors are "Square" motors; like the MKIV Supra's motor! If people can stikc a Ford 5.0 302 into a Miata why can't you stick a much smaller motor in? It sounds like it has the potential! Good Luck!

Can you get the rod lenght for this motor? Check the stroke to rod-length ratio.

Also, I think that 9.5:1 is too much compression for a turbo car, but I guess Miata guys seem to get away with a lot of boost for that compression. We have a hard time reliably running more than about 12 psi without water injection on the 9.5:1 bottom end on pump gas.

Sounds like one hell of a hybrid to me! Good luck!

Couple of things I have learned. It is 9.4:1 I ran 16-18psi for the longest time on 9.5:1 with no problems, and that was with the link on 1.6. I am running 20psi right now on 9:0 on 1.8. I belive the use of a full stand alone helps a lot.

Rod stroke is at 1.77 vs the 1.56 in my 1.8 A WHOLE lot better.

If I get my ass moving I could be the first Miata in the Country with the swap!

BTW Sodium filled exhaust valves also.

Hey my fathers friend with a Escort GT has been looking for this motor!!! Do you know the engine code? Where can you get this engine from in the US, and for how much?

Also do you know what kind of FWD tranni bolts up to the engine?

Ill give you the engine code under one condition.... If you find a good deal on it you will let me know :D The engine code is FE3. It is not a direct swap into a escort. IT is however a direct swap into the ~88 probe, mx6, 626. From a JDM 88-92 626i 16 valve.

It looks like any advantages in the FE3 could be balanced by the better availability of DET engines and aftermarket parts.

If I get my ass moving I could be the first Miata in the Country with the swap!
That would be slick, but from where I see it, exclusivity can also be a shortcoming.

I did some searching and came up with the engine code FS-ZE. I remembered back in my Gran Turismo 2 days (:D), there was a 4wd Mazda wagon in the game dubbed the Sports 20 (or the 2002 Protege 5 wagon). So far I found out it makes 170hp@6800rpm with a high compression setting (I think it's 10:1, but i'm not sure).

The Miata 1.8 engine bolted can bolt in a Escort with no problem, but these engine's can pose a problem? I'm still checking out some more on this engine for his friend.

SR20 B12 Give me a call when you get chance... 504-460-8510

And in my Drag class I can only run a Mazda engine.... I have rules to follow. Plus the occasional AUTOX.

I think I might be able to find that motor for you Mario. Kenny just found some jdm 2.5 probe motor with 195hp V6 for a customer and he also has an over abundance of mazda motors at his warehouse!! That one your looking for might be there. Ill find out for you.
