: Oil Filter Question

Changed the oil today after the decision to switch to Mobil 1. Everything looks good but the filter I was sold (didn't have one to compare at the time) is shorter than the one I took off. The diameter, seal and threads are the same and it installed just fine, but if you stand them both on a shelf the new one is about a half inch shorter than the one I took off. Obviously, this means that the capacity is smaller. Is this something I need to be concerned about?

TIA

i would surely hope not. my K&N filter is a bit smaller than the stock oil filter.

Case size that small in difference does not mean the capacity is smaller.

Without cutting them open and unfolding the filtering material, you cannot tell which filter is 'bigger'.

You may have been given a B14 oil filter. The B13 and B14 are similar, but not interchangeable. The b14 is the same diameter, but different heights. Do you have the part number and brand?

Eric -

New filter is STP #S4967
Old filter is Valvoline #VO-41

What do you make of it?

Talked to somebody at AutoZone this morning about the conundrum, and they said "instead of a 1 1/2 pint filter it's a 1 pint filter, it'll work fine." On the screen it said 1998 2.0L EFI, no listing for a 1994 with a 2.0. Is this what you're talking about with the B13/B14, Eric?

That's a B14 oil filter. First thing in the morning, get a B13 oil filter. The '91-'93 will fit. If you have another car, or someone nearby, that would be better. The filter will fit, but with a lot of oil pressure, it can pop off. I know the '91 -'93 had the high port, and you have a low port, but the filters are the same with all B13 SR20 cars.

This might be a good time to get a Nissan filter. I lost an engine in my 510 when a cheap filter pop'd off. The Nissan filter also has an anti-drain back feature that the cheap filters do not have. I have no experience with the K+N. I am really referring to the AutoZone, etc filters. Plus the nissan filter has the cars listed right on the side so you know you have the right one.

Even cheap filters have an anti drainback 'valve', but they're really crappy on some brand filters (FRAM for one).

How much are you guys spending on a K+N? Is a one time use filter or washable like their air filter? Forgive the ignorance please.

Unfortunately they are not washable like the air filters but they are quality they filter the best, cant remember how many microns or whatever but they are the best they also feature anti drainback valve just like OEM filter they range from 9.99 - 10.99 you might not see it on the shelf at kragen or auto zone (part no. HP 1008 for se-R) so just ask them to order it it comes in usually in about 5 days (HP- 2008 is for the GA16DE and KA24DE dont let those guys sell you that one it doesnt fit)

Anyone using Mobil 1 oil filters? I decided to try one this time around and haven't had any problems.
