: 91 cam question
Stiletto 03-16-2002, 05:05 PM finally installed the 91 cam. my question for those who have done it (i know this has been asked **, but searching for the answer is too ardous for me right now): how long should that clatter noise last? i've driven it for approx. 145 miles, and i still hear it. i checked my oil level and it's right on target. any ideas? TIA
PlanoSER 03-16-2002, 05:34 PM Clatter noise

I'm not sure what you mean either
Stiletto 03-16-2002, 09:37 PM there's a constant noise, identical to start-up clatter, that increases w/ my RPMs. i had it installed @ Rosen, and Nick said it would take a little bit for the valve springs and retainers to adjust to the difference in lift and duration of the new cam. but i'm kinda wonderin' how long i should let this noise continue ** i start to worry.
eric96ser 03-16-2002, 09:41 PM How does it drive? Each time I've installed cam, the sound only lasted for a few seconds. The only time it lasted longer was when I installed the cam in my wife's '97, and the cam sprocket wasn't fully in the "key". When I turned the car on, the sprockets turned, and came out of the key, leaving the cam like it was. Take the valve cover off, and turn the motor by hand. Make sure that both cams turn, and that the chain didn't jump a tooth.
Serban 03-16-2002, 09:43 PM Are you sure its not a spun bearing??
Does it sound anything like this (http://www.geocities.com/serban91r/rattle.wav)?
SmoothDaddyFig 03-16-2002, 09:47 PM STILETTO!!!!!!
Yo bro, that noise should have only last about 3-5 seconds.
It goes away and then its all smooth sailing from there.
Make sure its not a spun baering like Serban said. A few people spin a bearing after the 91 cam install. I know 3 including myself.
I hope its something simple. I didnt even use a torque wrench when I did my install. :D
good luck!
CNibbana 03-16-2002, 09:55 PM How do people spin a bearing after a new cam install? I don't see the correlation?
I'm thinking you may need to check / reshim the rocker arms.
OnyxEros 03-16-2002, 10:10 PM For me after my 4 day install (dont ask) the sound is gone after a few seconds and now i feel like i have v-tec power at 4k. I miss my little bump at 3.5k though :(
O
eric96ser 03-16-2002, 11:23 PM There's no need to reshim after a cam install. I don't think you have to do this after installing C series cams.

it drives fine. i haven't taken it past 4000 RPM, though. i would hope that Nick @ Rosen Autosport got everything in there properly. we even put the car in 5th gear and rolled it back and forth to make sure the install was good.
RckyMtnSER 03-17-2002, 01:12 AM a little off topic, but i was wondering...
theres a little, well, bump i guess you could say from 3.5k to about 4.2k rpm...its kind of like a power loss, then it comes back on after 4.2 ish...is this normal on a '95? its not huge, but still noticeable....is this what you were talking about onyx?
PlanoSER 03-17-2002, 03:54 AM rcky, that is exactly how mine feels, and boy does it really start to pull at 4k :D

That noise should only happen once for a few seconds. You need to take the valve cover off and inspect. Make sure all the rocker arms are positioned correctly and the chain is in the guides correctly and all the shims are in place.

okay, thanks. :)
one other thing (not that i'm doubting you're experience), but why was i told that it would last for about a hundred miles? ya'll are saying a few seconds and the mechanic (who knows sr20's very well) says otherwise. i'm just a little perplexed.
eric96ser 03-17-2002, 12:13 PM Was the cam a new one, or used one? Mine was used, and my wife's was new. Neither made noise longer than as few seconds. Take the valve cover off, and double check everything. Its better safe than sorry. Even the best mechanic in the world can miss something.

I dont get it either?
Maybe its from the EXCITED "LET ME SEE WHAT THIS CAM CAN DO" HARD DRIVING after the install.
I think the shop said that it lasts over 100 miles as an excuse.

There is no correlation. He's putting 2 and 2 together, with no evidence. I've had my cam in for 3 years now, and my wife's car has had it for little over 2 years. The cars that spun bearing had issues before the cam install. Quit jumping to conclusions smoothdaddy.

Try getting off your high horse there Mr Moderator.
I was just pointing out something that could have happened.
But yes my car did have some major issues with cruddy oil with the previous owner.
