Hey all,

I had my car in for scheduled maintenance this week. They said that oil was seeping out the front cover. They offered $975 to fix it, but I declined for now. I figure I'll keep an eye on it and fix it myself if it gets bad. My question is, how hard a job is this? Thanks.

$975?

Front cover? As in, valve cover?

If so, thats ridiculous. The gasket is $13 or so and takes probably a half hour to replace.

No, front cover as is timing chain cover. They say mine might be leaking but they only want $700 at my dealership here in Cincy. I looking at alternatives myself... let us know what you find out.

No, the front cover, on the front of the motor... the one the timing chain hides behind. 975 is a little steep, but that is one of the biggest pain-in-the-ass jobs possible on an SE-R. Did that quote include replacing the timing chain or anything else (the chain is all laid exposed when you pull the front cover).

they told me my engine crank seal was leaking, 187 to fix it. it's the seal right behind the crank pulley. it hardly ever leaks man, i am always checking my oil. this isn't the same as front cover, is it?

No. I just had the front crank seal done on my car. The timing chain cover/front cover, whatever you want to call it, is what you see when you're looking at the engine from the passenger side. To get at it you basically have to remove all the accessories, the oil pan, and the valve cover, which is why it's so expensive. It's not the parts, it's the labor...

My bad then. $975 is pretty accurate. Dealer once wanted $1100 to replace the timing chain.

Umm, I know that's what you said, Rittmeister, but you posted while I had the reply page open. Look how close the post times are. Next time I won't go take a leak with the reply page open :).

Besides, I tried to delete mine when I saw yours... guess it didn't go though.

I did mine a few months ago, since my motor had eaten its intake valves twice I decided it would be best to replace the chain and put in the updated chain rails. Its pretty involved, but not hard, I did it with the motor in the car. Luckily I had pulled the head from the block so I just had to pull the lower pans....... If you have any specific questions or need pictures just PM me or email me at RacerX@cox.net

hope that helps
