Are those staked steel balls stock?

And is the picture with the scratches the counterweights on the crank? if so, how the heck did they get scratched?

If you don't want to take the rod bearing caps off and measure clearances, then at least see is there is any fore/aft movement of the rods on the crank (fore/aft meaning front-to-rear of car). My motor with a spun bearing had tons of movement on the rod shaft with the spun bearing. The others didn't budge.

I'm dissappointed. I thought you meant you were "tearing the bottom end apart" and going to look at the bearings and take measurements and stuff, not just take the oil pans off.

Ben, don't be disappointed. :( That's as far as I got yesterday, before it got cold. As soon as it warms up, I'm going to take the rest of it off and finish measuring things. ;) You have got to get me a pic of what a clean bottom end is supposed to look like. I have no idea what to look for!

Well, a "clean looking" bottom end is not the biggest thing in the world. It's like looking under the valve cover. As long as all the cam lobes are smooth and the rockers don't look like the ones I have- all encrusted with buildup - then it's ok. Color, etc., is not as important. A car that used dino oil will look different than a car that used Mobil 1 synthetic.

With that said, FWIW, those pics look fine to me- the coloration is the same my Sentra had. Looks MUCH better than my spare motor.

Here's a pic of my Sentra's bottom end. You can see the coloration. This was before I got my digital camera- this is a scanned photo which is why it's so crappy.
