Am at a deadlock. All I know is my car, even with all the bolt-ons I had before, is not cutting it NA.

Give me the money for a turbo and you can live through my happiness :)

Hmm. Got any hot girls to compensate? :)

I voted for keep the 98 and turbo it. A few people have done it... most notably Ray Kawski if my memory still works right. Your motor still has relatively few miles on it... a perfect candidate for turbocharging. You don't even have to do anything extreme, maybe a GTiR DET conversion. You can get ~280 wheel HP and you probably won't want more than that. That much HP is a real handful in a lighter FWD car.

If you kept your car, how much money do you have available to put in to it? If you don't have enough to turbo the SE, how about getting a second job, or putting in some extra hours or overtime?

Right, I was with him last night. He lives about 15 minutes from me.

Thats the whole problem, it would be alot easier to sell the 98. But thats if I CAN sell it.....

Alright, same question. If you sell the SE, what's the budget you've got to work with? Other than the initial sale price of the SE, and purchase of a Miata, you got any money saved? And how much per month can you put towards a new project?

Well, owe $3,000 about yet on the 98. So suppose I could sell it for $7500, I'd pay off what's owed and then I'd have the difference of around $4500 to work with, but no car. So I could maybe find a cheap classic and do a DET. Have no idea, just running ideas through my head.

I would say go for the classic. SE-Rs are fairly easy to come accross for pretty cheap, then all you need is the "spare change :)" for the DET. This is the route I am going, except I get to keep my 95 GLE, sell my 91 XE, and buy my SE-R for the turbo project. I am getting my SE-R with a good body and seized motor for $1100. Look into it. I am getting my SE-R on tuesday and thats the same day my DET is getting shipped out :)....I can't wait. The only bad thing is waiting for the ECU :(. Later.

I'd say your in a real bind.. I had a 92 miata with the 1.6l in it..It was an awesome car, handled like it was on rails with a stock worn out suspension,, however if you are not looking to autocross and you are more into drag racing the miata is NOT the car for you.. with a K&N intake and my timing advanced my best time was a blistering 17.01 in the 1/4.. a jrsc will put you into the 15's roughly where you probably are now.. A miata is a fun car for turns and getting the hoes but thats about it.. For drag racing they absolutely suck (execpt for the 99-0n, or if you dump tons of money into it). good luck in your decision

Thanks for the input. I would love a Miata, honestly. I've had 2 classics already (93 XE and 91 SE-R) so I'm not sure how eager I'd be to have another one. Then again, it might be wise for me to keep an SR20, because I know so much about them and little about the Miatas.

Hmm..... to add more to the mix, I just saw a 93 SE-R for sale in Philly with no engine or tranny.

Know anywhere to get DET's? :D j/k

I vote you keep your current car and add the turbo when your pocketbook allows. You never know what you are going to get when you purchase a used car. A "deal" you saw one day could turn out to be a money pit the next day.

I was having the same dilemma... Sell the car, save about $500 a month (between payments and insurance), drive my Civic, have a lot of spending money and be happy; OR keep it, dump every last cent into a turbo, be broke for a couple months, and be happier? As I was driving around in my slow ass Civic, I decided I NEEDED a turbo SR20... so here I am: Broke, working on my turbo setup and I'm really happy with my decision. So I say, keep it and work towards the turbo!!:D

That is why i said "unless you dump lots of money into it.. the 1.8l motor only came in 93 or 94 and up cars..that means he had to swap motors and still turbo it.. anything can be fast its just a matter of how much you want to spend..He who spends the most goes fastest

Right, the 90-93 Miata motor is a little 1.6 liter making 116hp. About as peppy as a Sentra XE. The 94 went to a 1.8 and I believe, somewhere around 125 horsepower, but not sure.

i like miatas...but what about a 240sx? i looove those. you can get one with a blown engine for around 1k and then the whole det set up for it for around 2k and then have like 1.5 to play with...my idea:)
or maybe a dsm (i love those too)

You have driven a turbo sr20de, what did you think of the engine? Did it make you happy with the performance?
