Im in the process of gutting the interior of my car (free hp! well not hp, but lighter = faster). I was wondering how loud the car is once you remove the sound deadning material, like in the floor boards of the driver + passenger. Do you hear things such as rocks being thrown up, or the tires seem louder, or the rain hitting the bottom? This is my weekend car so i'm not too terribly worried about it. But i read that that material is f'ing heavy. Just today i removed the material from under the rear seats and in the trunk and put it in a plastic bag to see how much it weighs. i swear it weighs 10 lbs or more.

Yeah, it definately weighs a bunch. There is a thread here about weight reduction and how much everything weighs. The road noises will increase after removal of all the sound deadening. But who cares if it's your weekend whip. Exhaust will be louder throughout the cabin and engine noise as well if you remove the firewall blanket.

the sound material in the front driver + passenger side on the floor is like twice as thick as that shit in the rear, so i know it weighs a whooooole lot more.

its not bad at all. especially if you put your carpet back in. my car is 90% gutted and it only got louder once i installed motor mounts. yea, you hear rocks hit...and it gets kinda loud when it rains...but oh well, lighter is better. hell i dont even have a stereo in the car so it can be as loud as it wants.

If the noise begins to bother you remember that aftermarket sound deadening is higher performance. IE, it weighs less than the stock stuff and performs better. So you could get rid of the stock crap, replace it with something nicer and still be lighter and quieter than stock. NPM did it on one of their project cars.

Regarding the noise, its not so much that your exhaust will sound louder, its all the little dust, rocks and other debris you hear hitting the bottom of your car. After a while you get used to it and dont even think about it.

You hear every rock you run over, road noise is real loud, but at that point its probbably a race car anyway right

It's not bad at all with it taken out. I say take it all out. All the material weighed about 35-38 pounds in my B14.
