: FWD SR20DET (block)
nissan se-r 03-12-2006, 11:20 AM Good Morning sr20forum,
So I did a search but not sure if I did the right search (sr20det + block, sr20det blocks). I am trying to find out about the fwd sr20det block. It seems that 2 people my mechanic knows are having problems with thier blocks, I believe he said they have a hole in it. Now I tried searching to see what are the parts needed to replace mine. What I've order from JGY was ARP studs (main and head), Cometic metal head gasket, some rings and bearings. Our goal is, since the motor is out the car lets change what we can change LOL.. Any help is appreciated. I would ask my mechanic but he is a VG30DETT guy, doesnt know to much about SR's but he can put it in and change things but as far as what to change and things like that he said I should come on here and get some answers.
HJBarker 03-12-2006, 11:45 AM Here's an example of what I've done since my head gasket blew to pieces...
NEW (not remanufactured) water pump with steel impeller wheel. I specified the steel wheel in the water pump because I've heard stories of the plastic wheel coming apart.
VE oil pump kit (from mossyperformance.com). This is priceless as a peace of mind investment - for drag racing, track days, whatever, there's nothing better than oil pressure.
[/br]
Reworked Head (cleaned head, cleaned valves, new valve seals, new guides, lapped valve seats). You might as well do this while you've got the head off - reduces/eliminates oil consumption, and it helps restore lost compression.
[/br]
Knife-edged crank. Just like bolting on an ultralight flywheel - revs faster, less heat in the bearings (less weight rolling around)... you get the idea. Those who I've talked to (SR and non-SR owners) say it's a night-and-day difference for throttle response, lag, etc. but can make it difficult to putz around in traffic sometimes.
[/br]
Balance the rotating assembly (crank, rods, pistons, rings, bearings) - another peace of mind investment. If you like to take your engine to redline (who doesn't?) then having everything balanced at the very end helps to keep the bottom end from thrashing around and giving all your bearings unnecessary abuse.
That's all I got on the top of my head so far. (edit: how the hell do you turn on HTML code?)
nissan se-r 03-12-2006, 12:17 PM Thanks HJ.
So all of this has to do with the block, or is this like the whole SR motor stuff we're talking here..?

HJBarker 03-12-2006, 12:28 PM Everything except rebuilding the head... I figured since you mentioned a head gasket and studs then you wouldn't mind sending the head off.
The Water Pump and the Oil pump should be do-able by any nissan-familiar mechanic.
Make sure you ask around with other car guys, honda, subaru, whatever, and find out who (if anyone) had their engine built where, and how it's performed since then...
May the force be with you. Welcome to SR20 (about 3 mos. ago :))
