How difficult would this swap be in a '78 Datsun 280Z? I'm guessing it would be a pain in the ass. Has anyone done it or heard of it being done? I would have about $4500 to work with. TIA

If you're really committed to doing this, I'd suggest that you start with a DET from a Sylvia (some people don't know that this is a good idea  ), and try to get the harness and transmission from the same car. It's going to suck, but probably not more than putting a Chevy V8 in one, and you can buy kits to do that (Scarab).

It would be difficult, but not impossible. You should have plenty of room for the engine. Things you will need to do:

Get Engine and Tranmission
Get Complete wiring harness
Shorten/Lengthen Driveshaft
Mod to clear steering column (if necessary)
Fab Intercooler piping, Mounts
Modify Shifter Hole in Floor
Adapt Gauges
Possibly Upgrade Fuel pump
Make Downpipe

More stuff that I am forgetting. It can probably be done, but it will not be a walk in the park. You will have to do lot of fabrication for a swap like this. I hope you are handy with the welder, or know someone who is. The goods parts are, that I would image that your stock cooling system, and rear end can handle the power without too much of a sweat. Are you sure this swap hasn't been done before? I would imagine someone has tried it. I know it has been done in 510s before with success. My current goal is to aquire a 510 with good paint, that i can swap an SR20DET into!
