Ive got a 95 200sx se-r and Im having a friend of the family put it in due to my lack of the most basic knowledge about these engines... but i am gonna watch and help out in the hopes of learning about them... I was just curious how long it takes to install a 91 intake cam on a 95 sr20de? The guy has never done it this type of car... but he is pretty experienced with auto work... 4 hours sound about right??? Thanx

Oh yeah... and is there anything I should remind him about when he's doing it? Do we need to change any timing or anything like that... Thanx again :D

Good Lord, if he knows anything, it won't take anywhere near 4 hours. Probably 2 hours since it's just the intake cam.

Took me 2 1/2 hours to take S4's out of my car and put the stock cams back in by myself.

about 3 days if you don't follow directions...

If you do it will take about 2 hrs
SmoothdaddyFig has a "cam packet" that he will be more than willing to send you (i hope)

Remember this all the bolts are tightened in a specific pattern, get a manual.

Make sure you can see the Dot's on each of the cam sprokets intake at 10 o'clock exhaust at 12 o'clock

ZIP TIE THE CAM TO THE CHAIN ON BOTH SPROKETS. I found out the hard way what happens if you don't do that.

Remove the oil filter so you can remove the chain tesioner

Brace against the exhaust cam and use god's mighty heave to break the bolt on the intake cam lose (it's tightened to over 150 lbs)

Switch cams
Reverse above

Now I have given a very very VERY abriveated version of what to do seach the site and you will find the install notes

Remember this don't cheap out on anything and don't cut corners that is what turned this from an 1.5hr job to 3 days of hell for me.

Killa-Cali!!!!!

Yo, shnoopz

e-mail me right now at jonathan.figueroa@verizonwireless.com
and I'll get my "Cam Packet" out to ya.

Also do a "cam" search and start reading posts. Alot of info helps.
It took me 2 hours total.
I didnt use a torque wrench but I advise any newbie mechanic to use one. Just dont go torque crazy on those bolts.

Heres something else to watch out for.... DONT DROP ANYTHING IN THE ENGINE! Specifically, there is a very large area for nuts, bolts, sockets, tools, etc... to fall into on the passenger side of the engine adjacent to the timing chain.

Also, be careful when working around there, theres alot of sharp edges and you can easily draw blood.

Don't forget to put the engine at TDC by rotating the crank (cam lobes closest to the timing chain are pointing away from the engine)

Don't forget to "re-load" the timing chain tensioner by pressing down on it and hooking the little pin on the knob.

Hey SmoothDaddyFig,

Is your "cam packet" a printed material with pictures or something?

If you want to send me one I'll put it up on the net and give you the credit for it. This would be a valuable thing to have posted on a web site.

The cam packet is actually a how-to from Jay Hassinger and another one from Naji. It also includes my own personal tips for the install and stuff you will need. I cannot take full credit for the packet but thanks for the offer.:)
