: advanced timing
LudeSER13 03-20-2002, 04:10 PM man, this has got to be the suckiest power adder i've ever done. i just can't believe how much gas the car eats now when i advanced the timing to 17 degrees. i only get about 190-200 miles and the fuel light comes on. above it all, i can't feel a darn thing! does this suppose to make the car go a little bit faster? i had a mechanic do it and he showed me the timing with the light. sorry for the gripe, but i just had to share this with you guys.
dontblameme 03-20-2002, 04:16 PM well try setting your timing to 0 and get used to that, then put up to 17. Thats what mine was at. I changed it last night from 0 to about 16 give or take 1. That was a noticable difference, I still can't believe it was on 0. That explains alot.
I got a question though, last night when I was setting the timing, I got it to what looks about 16 or 17 degrees. Anyways I stared at for a little while and noticed that after about 10 seconds of idle the engine would surge a little and the timing would shoot up a little past the 20 degree mark. What causes this?
And does anyone else enjoy playing with a timing light? Especially at night :D
MaddMatt 03-20-2002, 04:22 PM You guys are disconnesting the TPS when setting the timing, right?
NismoSER 03-20-2002, 04:33 PM and don't forget to lock it in timing mode! (rev 3 times to ~3K rpm)
corbendallas 03-20-2002, 05:29 PM just moving it from 12 to 17 showed a noticeable improvement for me. And I didnt see any noticeable added fuel consumption
RollcageSR20 03-20-2002, 05:51 PM Advancing my timing from 15 to 19 degrees on my NX (stock at the time) while it was on the dyno yielded 3hp and 4ft/lbs of torque at the power peak (123/119 to 126/123). My dyno chart shows power/torque gains everywhere from 2000rpm to redline. It felt noticeably better! It seems like your mechanic improperly set your ignition timing. As for the low gas mileage, have you been redlining your car more often since the timing change? If yes, then that would be part or all of the reason why your gas mileage is low.
LudeSER13 03-20-2002, 06:18 PM i never redline the car since i've owned it when it was only 2 years old. damn, that must be it. i forgot all about the TPS. will the timing be different if this was plugged when it was being adjusted? about that locking the timing, do i do that while the TPS is unplugged? tia.
sr20detutah 03-20-2002, 06:40 PM Somethings not right. When I first advanced my timing on my DE from 15 - 17 degrees I felt a noticable difference. Mostly in throttle response. Gas mileage really shouldn't suffer very much. With bolt-ons and advanced timing my car actually got better and better gas mileage. Right before doing the DET swap I got 38 mpg on a road trip! I was averaging 27-28 mpg around town. I couldn't believe it at first but I calculated it many times.

here's the procedure i used: Adv. Timing (http://www.geocities.com/n_dahi/timing/timing.htm). enjoy. :)
Monsoon 03-20-2002, 09:35 PM i noticed a HUGE difference at 5000rpm in my car. when i say huge, i mean huge too! it was major.
MaddMatt 03-20-2002, 09:59 PM The garage I had set my timing screwed it ALL up. I asked for 15 (JWT ECU), they set it at 5. I concluded they did not unplug the TPS. When I set it properly, OMG the difference. I was like a kid at Christmas. Noticed a huge difference above 4 grand.
NismoSER 03-20-2002, 11:25 PM While everyone is pining about the increase from advanced timing, I'll chime in as well :D
For reasons beyond me, my timing was around 2 or 3 degrees. To put it in perspective, you know how sluggish your car feels when you have the A/C running?? Well, once I got the timing right at about 19 degrees, it felt like I turned off two air conditioners! I was, and still am, loving it!
Read up on it, and do the timing yourself. Its hard to find a mechanic who does things right.
NismoNx2000 03-21-2002, 11:05 AM i have to agree with nismoser on this one, do the timing yourself and dont forget to lock it in timing mode by reving past 3k 3 times and unplugging the tps. Plus, dont forget to use premium gas, its vital!!! My timing was at 15 and i bumped it to 19 and i felt a huge difference. Check it out, nismoser was at the track before he adjusted his timing and ran a 15.7, then he adjusted his timing and the next time he went he ran a 15.399....and thats without out doing any other mods....think about that one!! You should feel something man.

17 degrees is within the factory setting, so 87 octane is fine. I ran like this for over a year (17 degrees, 87 octane. Autocross, track, everywhere). Above 17, I agree, you need higher octane.

So run my '98 at 19* with 91 octane (best we can get at the pump in Denver), would that be considered 'safe'? Or would I need to use an octane booster every fillup? Like ths NOS stuff.
Thanks!
J

I think you're fine.
No knock? No problem.

I would be real carefull with that. I set my 98 Se at 17* and my car pinged very slightly without the premium fuel. With all those hills I would listen very carefully before using only regular at 17* advance.

sr20ser1997 03-22-2002, 11:23 PM is 19* better than 17*
LudeSER13 04-05-2002, 09:46 PM hey guys, sorry to bring this up again. i just want to let y'all know that i think i gained about 20 more miles just by unplugging the tps, rev it to 2-3k, and plugging it back in. i still don't know if the timing is set up correctly. oh well, thanks!
99SENTRASER 04-06-2002, 02:54 PM i have the same gas milage too
