: kiko's se-r R.I.P. read on....
KikoSanchez182 03-20-2002, 10:54 PM well today the sr20de with 111k miles on it and with a spun rod bearing for the past 6 months finally blew, its the end of the road for that engine. and due to financial concerns/ tranny reliability concerns, ive decided for my final plan for the se-r to be as follows:
get a de
go ahead an put the act clutch in
maybe get basic mods for it, just i/e/h
get some sound system goin for it
new tires
sell it
depending on how much longer i feel like havin the car for, decideds just how much of that i will get for the car and when i will sell it. my decision to sell it soon is based on the fact that the concerns for the transmission breaking are too great, as only 250 reliable hp is not enuf for me. so, my question to you guys is what a good project car for me would be, im looking for an import with 300 reliable hp, no supercars need apply(aka 3000gt, supra, 300zx, nor rx-7)
as of now im thinkin of goin back to the honda crowd with a lightweight hatch, b18c1 swap, and whatnot. please give input
spdracerUT 03-20-2002, 10:58 PM I'd personally opt for a 240sx.... 300 rwd hp is a lot more run (and usable) than 300 front whp.

KikoSanchez182 03-20-2002, 11:09 PM tru, in fact until i get my car fixed, im drivin my sis's 89 240sx, its got some pull, 135hp i think. but id like one i can do the full s15 conversion on, 95-98? also, how are there transmissions??
NismoSER 03-20-2002, 11:21 PM an '89 240sx has 140 hp, SOHC 12 valve KA24 motor. IIRC, the tranny's in the JDM 180sx/200sx and the stateside 240sx are the same. I haven't heard of too many problems with that tranny.
I say get a 240sx and swap the SR20DET into it....or even an RB series. Stay Nissan bro!!
I used to have a 1991 240, but I gave it to my brother so I could get the SE-R. I haven't regretted it since. I do miss it once in a while, but only for the attention that it got from its sleek styling :)
Who knows what extra horsepower couldn't do for that car though? I guess the reason I went with the SE-R is because it was more fun to drive in the stock/slightly modded/unturboed form.
However, in a few years both my brother and I will swap DET's into them, and we'll find out if the horsepower was the cure it needed!! :D
KikoSanchez182 03-20-2002, 11:31 PM yah i definetly like the lighter nore nimble feeling of the se-r compared to the 240, which is why im thinkin ill like a small civic
92SE-R 03-20-2002, 11:51 PM A 250 whp 2500 lb SE-R is going to wax most cars out there, even supercars. There's no other car you can get 300 whp out of cheaper or in as light of a package as a SE-R.

MaddMatt 03-20-2002, 11:56 PM get a de
go ahead an put the act clutch in
maybe get basic mods for it, just i/e/h
get some sound system goin for it
new tires
sell it
If you sell it, you'll never recover the cost of the mods. Just get an engine, fix what needs to be fixed on the tranny, get some tires and sell it. Forget the i/e/h, and boomin system.
92SE-R 03-21-2002, 12:34 AM I/H/E with a booming system is a DET.

KikoSanchez182 03-21-2002, 12:56 AM this is tru, it all just kinda depends on how soon i wanna sell the car and to the response on se-r being the cheapest way to 300hp, maybe so, but that tranny problem is killin me as i dont have the money to get new trannies every month, nor the knowledge to install them myself. and i cant afford to get and install a new tranny all the time, i just 17 with a 6/hour job.
se-rsrule 03-21-2002, 01:08 AM the cheapest way to the hp is to break down and buy small block camaro - but then you have to put up with all the pieces falling off.
Lyn Labahn 03-21-2002, 02:50 AM Hate to burst your bubble, but at 300WHP and a 6 dollar an hour job just do not mix! Trust me on this one, I spent all my high school years figuring out how to turbo my SE-R with a similar paying job. Its a real bitch man, let me tell you. There are literally DOZENS of things that you just don't think about. You will have to work all the time, and have no life. You won't be able to spend money on anything else. Chances are, you will just give up in the middle and sell the stuff for a loss. Sorry to pigeon hole you man, but I have been there done that myself, and seen too many people in your position.
You seem pretty adamant about having 300HP, maybe you don't realize how much that is. It is a lot for the street, trust me. Being a 17 year old with no fear of death doesn't help either.
I think the best route to go would be a DET, hell, your DE is already blown, perfect timing. Pick up a clean DET and install that mofo. Make sure your suspension is up to par, and the rest of the car is running well. Get the car running well at stock boost, with stock IC and such, you could even run a small exhaust, if you take it easy on the car. Then, just take your time, and upgrade things. Mechanical Boost Controller here, FMIC there etc. Any questions, just ask.
Figure at least $3000 to buy in though!
SR20DEVIL(T) 03-21-2002, 06:51 AM Hey if you want to get rid of the car, blown motor and all let me know :). Im in the market for an SE-R.
KikoSanchez182 03-21-2002, 01:58 PM well after thinkin it over hard in school today, i decided to just keep the car and go with most of the basic mods, and some sound. i just dont wanna have to deal with all the troubles of bein in debt. and ill prob do suspension soon enuf and go scca. the more i thought about how often i almost get into wrecks(other peoples' fault, ppl cant drive i swear), id prob get into a few wrecks with the power of a det. but if i change my mind(which i do about 4 times a day) and sell the car, u guys will get first dibs
