Ask me in a couple weeks. :)

I have a powder-coating rig on order that is supposed to be delivered in the next 4 days or so. Once it gets here, I will be able to do medium sized parts.

My plan is to offer up powder-coating services to the SR20DE Forum members for a decent price. I already have Ruby Red, Gloss Black, and Cast Aluminum powders ready to go, and can order about 50 other colors very quickly if the demand is there.

Didn't want to post this yet, but your post was just too tempting. If you can't find somebody close by soon.....give me a shout in 1-2 weeks.

What will the cost be, Greg? I found somebody local for what seemed a reasonable price, but I'd be willing to drive to your place to see the progress of the turbo install and coat my VC and intake piping while there, depending what you want to charge. Or send it to you, whatever, I've been planning on sourcing a used valve cover for this project.

BTW, what does a powder-coater cost?

Greg do you have a bead blaster as well?

Not to take any prospective business away from Greg, but here is a link to a place that does what appears to be very nice work. Someone on this forum posted a picture of his engine bay, with parts done by this company, and it was quite beautiful.

Kent--

A powder-coating rig is quite inexpensive. Around $100-150. However, you need an air compressor to power it, plus a secondary oven to bake the finish on with. We just retired our oven, so I got lucky. :)
I don't want to gouge you guys, so I'll have to see what other shops charge to powder coat certain pieces. I should be able to undercut them, no problem. Shipping will be one factor to consider. Or, like Kent, if you're close enough just drop on by. :)

Ralph--
I do not have a bead blaster. I plan on powder-coating items that are bare metal or painted, and just stripping the paint off and degreasing the part before applying the powder coat.
I'd love to have a bead/sandblasting rig, but I just can't justify the expense.
Yet. ;)

Greg -

Just to give you a starting point, I was quoted $40 for a valve cover and $10 for the TB to MAF pipe on my intake, if I got it done at the same time as the VC. This was by a local shop, and is the best price I have found in the Cincy area.

This is all academic for me right now anyway, I have to wait until I'm not poor again.

That's super cheap. Nobody's getting rich there.

Nobody should worry about taking business from me. I'm not powder-coating in order to make money, really. Just to get some of my own stuff done the way I want it done. And, to offer up to do stuff for guys who may not have a powder-coating shop anywhere nearby, if they want it done.

My powder-coating rig arrives on Monday. Hint to the wise: Do not order anything from Harbor Freight Tools online. You will be sorry.

Oh...I got the powder-coating rig for $69.99. Add on the air compressor and a spare oven to bake it in, and you're in business.

Greg what would you paint a valve cover for? I have gotten estimates for around $50-$60 for my valve cover.
If you meet or can beat these prices with shipping I will be a customer.

I got a quote for $75 for a valve cover. The company I called is ProPowder (http://www.propowder.com) This guys are in IL and close to my work.

[edit] I will be checking on two other company around here. I forgot their business card at home. I'll post tomorrow my findings.

If you consider that shipping will be a minimum $10 each way ($20 total), then I would have to charge another $20-30 to powder coat a VC, to be honest with you. The powder isn't very expensive at all, but the time stripping all the old paint/finish off and degreasing it can add up.

As for where I bought my powder coating rig....here is a word to the wise:
I bought it from Harbor Freight Tools online for $69.99. Do NOT order anything from their website if you want to receive it sometime sooner than 30 days from now, because I can guarantee you that is how long it will take to get to your door. You have been warned. I've even filed a complaint with the Better Business Bureau about this. Their shipping is THAT bad.

You will need an air compressor with a regulator. Plus, you'll need a spare oven that you don't plan on cooking anything edible in. Ever. Powdercoating produces some vicious fumes and leaves residues in the oven. Proper ventilation and a breathing apparatus are mandatory.

SERprise, how much would you charge if The Paint was already stripped from the VC?

I would imagine that $40 would cover it. You pay shipping. Let me get the rig in here and a VC actually done before we go ahead with this, boys.

I have Ruby Red powder ready to go. I'll post up some pics later on in the week once the 'test' VC is done. :)

Yes, Eric it would be a good thing. I found out that we have a HFT store about 45 minutes up the road in Charleston *after* I ordered the powdercoating setup.
