: Tech Heads! Please Help Asap!!!
ser_lover 03-24-2002, 01:23 AM Hello. I own a 96 200sx se-r. A buddy of mine was driving my car and was racing a dodge truck and was in third and hit 7 thousand rpms and then he shifted to second instead of four because of the short shifter. All the sudden there was like a lose of power. I remember pulling the cluth in and cost in to walmart and stoped . I then tried to pull it up and it would but the car would shake bad and was pigging. I know its not the engine because the noise isnt in the motor. It right behind the cams which is where the intake and the carborader is. I moved the timing around to see if the time when out of place but that didnt help at all. I then reved the car up a little and its gets worst and shakes real bad. What could it be? Intake valve or o ring? Some body help me for the love of god. My se-r is my baby. I cant stand this! thanks aaron
sounds like you busted some thing inside like a valve stem, rocker. pull your valve cover off to look at rockers and valve stems for damage. and look down the spark plug holes with a flash light to see if there are any marks on the piston heads if you can see in the holes.
Sounds like you busted up some or all of your rocker arms. Dont feel bad it happens to the best of us. Me included. Its really not to hard to fix but will all the messing around you did, you may have messed up your cams also. Take off your valve cover and look at you rocker arms (the things that the cams hit to open the valves. You need to find everything. Look for broken peices. If any of them are broken (and they are) you need to find the shims. There are two shims for every rocker arms. They are small metal disk looking things.
ser_lover 03-24-2002, 09:06 AM How much is all this going to cost me? Where is the best place for parts? (cheapest) This shit makes me heart broken :( but it was a hell of a ride while it was running. :)

If you think your SR20DE has a carburetor, I highly suggest taking your engine to a Nissan shop to find out what broke up top. As the other guys suggested, it's probably a rocker arm or two or three.

I was getting ready to say the same thing.
"Put the tools down, and back away from the car slowly...."
Busted rocker arms is almost always the result of a missed shift high rpm exploration in an SR20.

IF you really think that you can do it yourself, You can get the rocker arms for about 20$ a pop at the dealership. But you NEED to find EVERYTHING!!! The last thing you want is some metal to make its way through the oil journals and down to the bottom end.

I am going to get a mac. to help me do it to be on the safe side since this is the first thing that has broke on my car. As for the engine. I think you guys are right about rocket arms and I think that the lose of power may be my distubuter. Would you guys suggest changing all the rocket arms or just a few? thanks aaron

Rocker arms.
Umm, it's not a judgement call, you just open it up and see what's broken. If it's broken, you replace it. Make sure the cams aren't gouged up or anything, too. Considering you ran it again after it happened, I wouldn't be surprised if you have other damage.

ser_lover 03-24-2002, 11:16 PM I costed into the walmart parking lot as far as I could and move it up about 10 feet (had to move it into a parking spot cause I was in the road)....I havent drove it since....but have started it. I just hope i didnt do anything else to it. thanks for the help
xsk8er123 03-03-2005, 02:03 AM i didnt the same thing like a week ago...shifted from 3rd to 2nd..it sucks....but i have tried to started...i didnt check to take of the valve cover or anything like that...and when i found out that it was the rocker arms...ive tried to started like 4 or 5 times before i found that out...does anyone konw if i would of fucked up something???....i cams has like little damage on them....should i get new ones???and ive only found 5 outa the 6 shims...but im goin to check the oil pan soon....and 3 or my rocker arms broke...if i need to know something please tell me!!!!
Those shims are no joke, I was driving a car that had the rocker arms broken and fixed, but two shims were lost. well, aparently they found their way to somewhere, because the whole motor siezed up while i was driving it...
my point is, find EVERY piece, or say goodbye to your motor.
Tony Gti-R 03-03-2005, 12:35 PM Yeah sounds like a rocker arm!
I snapped one and it got stuck between the cam and valve wedged open the valve, made it sound like a impreza while i drove it home :eek2:
Was lucky that it didnt take out the whole valve train! as i drove it about 10miles home :eek2:
