Hello. I posted another post kinda like this one in the tech forum but I figured I would ask it here also. A buddy of mine was driving my car and was racing a dodge truck and was in third and hit 7 thousand rpms and then he shifted to second instead of four because of the short shifter. All the sudden there was like a lose of power. I remember pulling the cluth in and cost in to walmart and stoped . I then tried to pull it up and it would but the car would shake bad and was pigging. I know its not the engine because the noise isnt in the motor. It right behind the cams which is where the intake and the carborader is. I moved the timing around to see if the time when out of place but that didnt help at all. I then reved the car up a little and its gets worst and shakes real bad. What could it be? Intake valve or o ring? Some body help me for the love of god. My se-r is my baby. I cant stand this! thanks aaron

P.S. has this happend to anybody else and what did you do to fix it?

Solution: Ask friend for a lump sum of money, and Purchase Jap Spec SR20 :D

I"ve heard of people mis-shifting 6 speeds, but it seems awful difficult to mis-shift a SR20 gearbox.

I would tell your friend to give you money now. Shifting from 3rd at 7000 to 2nd gear....thats just really sick.

That's why you don't let people who can't drive, to drive your car. Hmm I have heard that if you over rev you might have thrown some rocker arms . best thing to do is take off the valve cover and look inside the head. It is not hard. You just have to buy silicone and 2 different gaskets. (valve cover and spark plug gaskets.)

Bryan

he shifted to second instead of four because of the short shifter Yeah blame it on the shifter.

Aaron, that really sucks. I guess right now it doesn't matter how long it takes for the CAI to get there! :(

I would pretty much bet you broke a couple rocker arms in ths miss-shift....

Take off the valve cover and inspect them, if they're broken they will usually be in 2-3 pieces laying under the cams somewhere. Definately don't drive it until you make sure they're all ok.

If they are broken a new Rocker Arm is around $16 each from the dealer.

Actually yes....

Missing shifts is pretty common in our cars, especially the 3rd to 4th and grabbing 2nd scenario.

I know 4 people right off the top of my head that did it. Ray Kawski in his 98, Ryan Walsh in his 97, Mike Gosselin in his 98, and Marc Anderson in his 97 - all blew a bunch of rocker arms in each case grabbing second. Is it not the cars fault, it is all driver error, but it's a common one at that.

And me to that list. Tore up my 97 that way. Broke two rockers, got crappy compression on all cylinders, so got new engine, installed and decided to sell my SE-R. I still have the damaged engine in the shed still have not taken the head off but plan to eventually. The strange thing (tying this to the orginal post by ser-lover) is I bought a Dodge Truck (R/T), freaky.

As storm said, It is not uncommon at all. I was in the list that Storm posted and can add 3-4 names to that list. I did it on track at last years convention.

Wasn't it pure luck then that someone had a spare rocker arm with them? I thought it was Larry that had one but I can't remember.

I have to have 16 right? Your right....about the CAI. I guess it really doesnt matter now. :)

Yeah...I cant really blame him even though itwas his fault. He said he would help pay for it so I am cool with. As for shifting. I remember when I first got the car...Man I had hell of time finding 3 and fourth but I didnt get the rpms up that high so it didnt matter when I shifted into from 3rd to 2nd. Plus I have a short shifter which makes it ever harder.

As for the engine. I think you guys are right about rocket arms and I think that the lose of power may be my distubuter. Would you guys suggest changing all the rocket arms or just a few? thanks aaron

For some reason I think you only need 8. Yes that is a horrible memory on my part considering how often I have my valve cover off. Blame it on the drugs. :)

Aaron, you only need to replace the ones that are broken. They are not like batteries, they do not lose energy. They are either broken or they're not.

O...ok....I didnt know for sure. Have you guys ever seen after market rockers? Would it be worth it?

Correct me if I am wrong, but if rocker arms are broken, then the valve that is controled by that arm is closed, right? So if the valve is closed then you should be able to get compression on that cyliinder, right? This is the logic I used when I had this problem, was I right? I got no compression so I assumed I had a valve that was stuck open, probably from being bent, and it the valve was bent then there was most likly damage to the piston. Please tell me I am right, I will be pretty mad if it turns out I could have simply replaced the rocker arms instead of the whole engine. The reason we did not take the head off is because 1. none of us had even done so before, so we had no idea what kind of trouble we would have, 2. We were not sure if we had the right tools, and 3. My buddy thought just putting a new engine in would be easier. Although it is too late now, I would still like to know if I was thinking correctly or if I was way off.

Ouch. 9 out of 10 times just the rocker needs to be replaced - I have never personally seen anything worse than broken rockers from a miss-shift.

It was Jack Laverty who had the spare rocker arm for MarC. I was in his car when it happened. 2nd, 3rd, 2ND, "SHIT, I THINK I BROKE SOMETHING!!!" Luckily everything was alright with so many ppl willing to help out including hass, kojima, cadle and others.

Uh, if you have a carb in your car, you have other issues. I would go with what others have said. Pull the valve cover and count the broken parts. Do not drive it, or start it until you have fixed it.

And if you are having problems shifting wioth the short throw shifter.I would replace it..if anything, my SMC made it easier to shift...hmm, maybe I've just been driving manuals too long..:D

My friend also shifted from 5th to 2nd instead of 4th and he fucking broke t rocker from the exhaust cam. pop your valve cover off and see what is the deal.
